Laptop Keyboard Not Responding After Replacement

Hi All. I have a Dell M4700 laptop, Win 10. A few keys on the keyboard were missing, though the keyboard worked fine otherwise. I replaced the keyboard with a new keyboard that said it was compatible, and I followed all the instructions, and as best as I can tell it is installed correctly, everything clicked on properly, etc. But I am getting no response from the new keyboard at all. I tried putting the old keyboard back in, and it won't respond now either. External USB keyboard works fine.

I have run diagnostics, and I have checked all settings that I know to check. I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them from Dell, and the computer tells me it is up to date, that the keyboard is installed, and that it is functioning properly. I don't know what else to check at this point and was hoping y'all could help me. It's a few years old so no warranty or care are available from Dell.

My kid was messing with the old keyboard after I removed it, so it is possible that he messed something up to make it not work, and also that the replacement keyboard is a dud, but I'd love any other suggestions before buying another keyboard. Thanks!

Just because those flat cable catch in the clip, doesn't mean they are making contact, might try reseating that cable.

So, that's what I thought might be the issue too, and I do think that is likely the issue. However, I have tried and tried to reseat it, and I am just not sure what more to do with it. It seems to be in there all the way. Any other ideas for making sure I've got it seated right? I looked at a bunch of videos, but they just say "seat the cable as a reverse of disconnecting it," and there is no more detail given. I am stumped!

Giving this a bump to see if anyone has any other ideas.

I really don't think it's a matter of the cable not seating correctly; I don't see any possible way it is not in there, and when I got to device manager, it shows as having a keyboard installed in the keyboard port.

I finally gave in and took it to a local computer geek shop. They looked at it, bought yet another new keyboard, installed it. . . and nothing. They have no idea what's wrong with it and why the keyboard just will not respond.

I've reinstalled drivers, updated everything. No luck. I have adjusted some settings in language, but nothing. I've tried several lists of "things to try to fix your nonresponsive keyboard," and nothing. The computer thinks all is well. What am I missing??

Curious, does the old KB work if you put it back or did the kid do something to it?
Does the touchpad work? So you have two KBs in device manager? The external and the insternal?

The old KB stopped working as soon as I replaced it as well. (It had been working fine before that, minus a couple of keys.) So that makes me think that something else is up. My toddler did later mess with the old keyboard so that it got bent, so I threw it away, but even before he did that, it had stopped working.

    The touchpad works.

I do have two keyboards listed in device manager. One says HID keyboard, in USB port, working properly. The other says Standard PS/2, plugged into keyboard port, working properly.
