I have a friends laptop here it is an Acer aspire 1642WLMi and have been trying to get the keyboard to respond but without success, if i attach another keyboard via USB it works perfectly except the on/off will not work also if i use the start button on the desktop to try and shut it down that will not work either.

The OS is Windows XP home.

    Any ideas please.

    Hi Bill

Laptop kbs take some punishment in their lives, icve been through 2 on a compaq of mine, so what I woukd try is to open it up and double check the connector is pushed in firmly, even unplug and replug in again.

check the keys for a broken one, generally you can feel if one doesnt feel the same as the others when typing.

delete the driver from device manager and reboot, could be a corrupt driver file

    Thanks David.
I am a bit unsure about opening it as it's not mine and if i break something i will feel really guilty.

I have no problem with desktop PCs but i have never delved into a laptop.
