Laptop LCD resolution problem...

My laptop has recently started to misbehave. Quite often when the computer resolution changes, in a game for example, the screen will go weird colours and won't show a picture. I can still see things happening, a movie playing will show the weird colours change accordingly, but no picture is visable at all. The only way to fix this is too turn off or hibinate the computer, closing the lid to turn off the lcd has no effect. The laptop has an ATI graphics card and I've tried uninstalling the drivers using driver cleaner pro in the proper way and reinstalling them. This problem has only started happening in the last few weeks.
Any ideas what might be causing this?

 

I may be mistaken but I thought that LCD's had only a single native resolution which can't be changed. If that's the case, that's the cause of your problem. Find out what your LCD's resolution is and make sure any software, including games, that you run is set up to run at that same resolution. Other resolution settings, even though they may show as options in a game, for example, are going to cause problems.

I'm still running on CRT displays myself, but it seems to me that I've read that LCD's have only one resolution. Maybe you only recently started having problems because you've only recenlty tried to change the screen resolution?

 

LCDs have a native resolution, that's true. But, they are not limited to ONLY that resolution. If you run a different resolution, it will just look blurry. At least from my experience, I've not had an LCD act funny at a non-native resolution.

 

Ah, thanksl for the clarification Wyatt. I wondered if LCD's were really limited to a single fixed resolution. So much for my theory/fix.
