What should I do first? Get a new graphics card, replace actual monitor? (need tutorial for both lol!)

I have a gateway nv53u. I have to smack it or flick it for it to straighten up after presenting gray, sort of dotted lines across the top and then slowly fading into gray which then freezes the mouse and ability to a thing on my compute.

I reset the resolution a million different ways. I had a reccomendation to check refresh rate, but there is only one option for that which is 60. My screen is 15" but I have the res set now so that it doesnt touch the top, bottom, or sides. Now It is kind of flickering a bit but not getting so bad that it fades off. What should I do?

A random add on!!! My battery needs replaced, could this have ANY thing to do with it by chance? I don't think it would.

Also, driver has been updated. Made no difference.

First, hook the PC up to a standard VGA monitor. If the problems repeat on an external monitor, it points to your on-board graphics card as the issue. If this is the case, it will likely require replacing the entire motherboard - add this to the cost of a new battery and you're looking at spending as much (or more) than the cost of a new PC.

If the display is OK on the external monitor, it points to an issue with the screen itself. Regardless of what videos on YouTube show, replacing a screen on a notebook PC is a detailed and sometimes complicated process. Unless you are extremely handy with working on small items and connections, this is a job best left to a pro.

Again, consider the total cost of both the screen and battery. Having a PC shop replace the screen will run around $200; a battery at amazon.com will set you back around $40. If you can find a new PC with equal specs for under $400 I'd buy new since it will come with a one year warranty.

    Hope this helps. :)

This doesnt make me very happy, but thanks. I have to find a standard monitor now, since I gave mine away and cant even borrow it because they live far! Can I use my 55 inch hd tv? Lol.
