Laptop not responding

I have a fairly new (10 months old) HP Pavilion dv4000 running Windows XP. It worked pretty much perfectly until just a few days ago. Now, it will boot up fine but opening programs or running them is really s-l-o-w, and often it just locks up altogether. When this happens, the cursor moves around but nothing works-- not even task manager. I can't shut the computer down. I have already run a full virus scan using Norton Anti-Virus, (virus defs may be a little old) and it only showed 1 low-threat tracking cookie. I de-fragged the hard drive, when I could get it to work. (Took forever!) I restored the system to a restore point when it was working fine. It still has a problem! The only thing I have done to it lately is that last week I installed the new MS Office 2007. It seemed to work fine after that, but now I have major grief. Can you suggest anything else?

Seems more a software issue over malware so lets try this first as it possibly could be an issue that Norton has with Office or more so the Norton Office Plug-in, as Office 2007, dependent on version can have various office apps running in background, then the Norton Office plug-in can cause slowdowns in running as you describe, so disable the Norton Office plug-in, even doing this you are not leaving your PC vunerable as Nortons live scanning will still pick up any malware.

Then if this is not the issue we can try the malware route.
