Laptop not shutting down

I have a Samsung Laptop with Windows 7. Since yesterday my laptop has not been shutting down or restarting. When I try to shut down the computer just freezes and I have to hold down the power button to get it working again. I noticed this after doing a malware scan with malwarebytes. It found a few trojans and said to restart but it wouldn't, it just froze. I am worried my computer is infected. I have followed the malware removal thread but when I opened roguekill the screen went blank and the computer seemed to turn off. I tried to run it again. I opened roguekill and it automatically started scanning the running processes and it just froze. I have uploaded the logs from the last two malwarebyes antimalware scans as they seemed to find different infections each time. I also ran superantispyware which also found infections but for some reason the logs are not there. Should i run through the rest of the malware removal steps. I wasn't sure if this was necessary to begin with as there are no other signs of infection apart from not shutting down and the trojans from the scan

i realised i should have carried on with the malware removal guide so i have attached the logs for each program. RogueKiller is still not working. The computer freezes when it gets to windows.exe. The malwarebytes antimalware log is for the latest scan I did when going through the removal guide. The previous post were for ones i did yesterday

    Uninstall the below software:
    Codecv
    SProtector 1.62

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.claro-search.com/?affID=...HP_ss&mntrId=1430cec60000000000004cedde646d92

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run it by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7, or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MoveIt!.png button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXTlog
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

i ran mgtools like you said but when i selected fix the computer froze again and I had to shut it down by holding the power button. I then tried it again but doing each line seperately and it worked for

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.claro-search.com/?affID=1...004cedde646d92

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://search.gboxapp.com/

    But when I tried
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ecc7c8c51c0850c1ec247c7fd3602f20] "C:\Users\Robert\AppData\Local\Temp\windows.exe" ..
    and
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ecc7c8c51c0850c1ec247c7fd3602f20] "C:\Users\Robert\AppData\Local\Temp\windows.exe" ..

it froze. It didn't get rid of the first two though as it froze on restart
The same thing happened with OTM, when i clicked move it it froze again. Junkware removal tool worked fine. I have attached the required logs. the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log doesn't exist althought I assume that is because OTM did not run

Please reboot your PC in safe boot mode and try the OTM fix again. If it runs okay, then afterwards reboot to normal mode and run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat programs and attach the logs from OTM and the new MGlogs.zip

  6. MrMajeika

rebooted in safe mode and OTM ran fine. Have attached the log for OTM. It won't allow me to attach MGLogs.zip as it says I have already attached it in a previous post. I have opened it and it looks exactly the same as the last one. The file was already on my desktop from when I last ran the GetLogs.bat, will the new scan not have updated it?

It will only update the onework on yourthe desktop if you rerun the Getlogs.bat program thru to completion. Try again and make sure it finishes running.

No. Your logs look clean now. Are you having any more malware problems?

it is still freezing when shutting down. I am worried it is still infected as my stupid brother accepted a file through skype and i think it was infected. And i got the blue screen yesterday when i restarted

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Based on your logs, you are not still infected. It just may be due to residual damage to Windows itself. Let's try a few things to see if it helps.

Be patient while doing the below. The fixes can sometimes take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.
Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.

Also let's run an additional malware scan with ComboFix.

Now download and save a copy of combofix.exe and save it directly onto your Desktop folder.
    • Then right click on it and select Run As Administrator. Do not disturb it by clicking in the window that opens or it may stall.
    • After it finishes, it may reboot your PC. Attach the C:\combofix.txt log that it creates.
    • If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you receive the following error:
      • Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion
    • Then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

It is actually shutting down ok now. Still want me to run combofix?

    No!

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Go back to step 4 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    7. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

ok thanks for your help. I have followed the instructions for the final steps. I am currently using Microsoft security essentials. Do you recommend I change to Avira free edition? I think i can get Kaspersky security suite free for one year through my bank but I am worried it might be a little heavy on resources. Also i currently use SuperAntiSpyware and malwarebytes for scanning. Should i also install spywareblaster and spybot?

  15. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

    You're welcome.
Avira is more powerful and harder to defeat than MSE. MSE is fine if you and other people who may use the PC are not frequently causing the PC to get infected. If you have frequent problem, you may need something more powerful including a better firewall than what Windows provides.

SpywareBlaster for sure. Spybot only if you do not allow Teatimer to run or allow it to run anything at startup.
