laptop piece o crap

hi all
my mom gave me her compaq presario v2205us and it has worked pretty good for the last few months other then if you touch it wierd it just shuts off.
but now i cant seem to get it to turn on unless its plug into the wall.
i double clicked the ac power icon in the taskbar and it says current power source ac power
total battery power remaning 97%
i deleted a few programs last night and now this is happining
so i dont know if its somthing i deleted or if this thing is just a piece a crap and i need a new battery plus i dont think i deleted anything that would apply to this just some games and stuff.
it worked fine last night but now nothing unless plugged into the wall.
ive tried takeing the battery out for several hours and plugging it in to see if it will charge but still nothing.
is there some way to tell me if the battery is bad?
i dont have the $200 to buy a new battery and find out its still messed up.
