I have an acer laptop. Its getting on a bit now, but the power recharging seems to be faulty. It will suddenly stop powering up and run on battery until you "twiddle" with it. Then it wil just "go" again.

I have tried another tested power supply but although a little bit more reliable stops charging intermittently.

Any idea what the problem is and how to fix it (or how much...)?

it could be the battery dying out. have you tried using another battery?

Sounds like its getting loose, or possibly the contacts are dirty. If you can take it out and wipe the metal contacts with ideally contact cleaner or isopropanol alcohol, that should get rid of any grease.

If its loose in the laptop, then there isnt much you can do about that, other than wedge somthing in there to keep it still.

Oh wait, do you mean twiddle with the socket/plug? That could be a power socket problem. You could try going to a repairshop and getting them to look at it and maybe re-glue the socket in place or replace it... its fairly simple if you've got the right parts.
