I have been using an external usb keyboard on my laptop. it is a gateway running vista home. if i unplug the keyboard and try to use my laptop keyboard it is like the function button is active.

for example if i press m then i get a zero instead. if i press p i get *. how can i make the keyboard go back to normal i tried using function but that dose nothing unless i hold function while at the same time type the letters i want

I suspect the num lock was on when you unplugged the USB keyboard. Try plugging it back in and turn off the num lock before you unplug it.

I know there is a key combination to turn it off but I can't remember what it is. I think it might be Ctrl + ScrLk. On my Thinkpad, it's Shift + ScrLk.
