Laptop reboots several times before Windows loads

Hey there,

I have a problem i hope someone can help out with.

When I start the laptop, it gets to the BIOS prompt (Press <f2> to enter BIOS) and then it restarts. This happens 5 or 6 times and then Windows loads and it works fine. After Windows has loaded i can restart the laptop (Start button >> restart) and it restarts and loads Windows the first time. If i turn it off (Start button >> Shut Down) and then turn it on with the power button, it does that restart dance over and over again.

When it is in it's restart dance, I can't get into the BIOS (F2) or the boot screen (F8). When i press one of the F keys, the laptop just beeps and restarts again.

Computer:
Acer Aspire 5742Z
Windows 7 Home Premum 64-bit (new clean install)

Things i've tried:

• Re-installed the OS and all the drivers
• CHKDSK - no errors
• blew air into the CPU fan and vents (IT is only a year old so it was pretty clean)
• turned off "automatic restart on error" (Computer >> properties>> advanced system setings >> Start up and recovery settings >> "Write an event to the system log) - No errors were wrote to the log (I specified the location of the new log file i wanted to use and it exists)

 

I have seen something like this only once,,on my sons computer but it was just a faulty install,,the harddrive lagged while being formatted and reinstalled. Not sure if that is what happened to you,,but no harm was done to his and that was 6 yrs. ago and alls still going strong.

What did you do to fix the restarting issue? Or did you just leave it alone and live with it?

Like I mentioned, I reformatted the HD and re-installed the OS and still have the same issue. Does that suggest a hardware problem?
