Laptop repair...still waiting

OK as some of you may know, just over 7 weeks ago I took my laptop back to Comet (a month after I'd bought it) because the screen was very faded and the mouse touch-pad had just died. It looked like the brightness had been turned right down, but was faulty.

Anyway, I was quoted a maximum of 28 days until I had it back - and I'm still waiting.

I went to Comet a few times, they contacted HP who couldn't diagnose the problem after 3 weeks http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/images/smilies/eek.gif :madand then they told me that they'd sent the wrong part so it'd be even longer.

Then, I got a call last week from Comet saying that the laptop would be with me middle of this week - I'm yet to hear from them.

Basically, what I'm asking, as I'm going to go down to Comet later and find out what's going on - is what should I do next? Just wait until I get my laptop back? Express my disatisfaction? Any chance I can wag some compensation from HP and/or Comet?

Id be asking for a brand new one, 7 weeks is just ridiculous :(
If they eventually give you back the same one, you're probably not going to trust it for a while.
Only problem of course is the data you have on the faulty one.

You could always ask them to swap your old hard drive into an otherwise completely new unit.
Its just a question of how far their liability extends, and how much they care about their reputation
    :mad :boxing :strong :boxing

    Good luck

Yeh well there's 2 bits of data on there that I want, the rest is backed up onto here (my desktop).

Funny that I built my desktop, and have had nothing go wrong eh???

But yeh, I'm gonna say to Comet that this really isn't on, and I will be writing to HP.

Hey McAdam.....I'm sorry you are getting a rough ride from these retailers. Over the years I came to expect that kind of custmer service in the UK when something went wrong. It's very different over here and that has been a wonderful surprise! I couldn't believe how quick Gateway turned my laptop issue around, even with bad weather out in Chicago.

I've swiped this off Rikky's signature which might help you work out what direction you wish to take next http://www.dti.gov.uk/ccp/topics1/facts/salegoodsact.htm

I would strongly suggest a letter to Comet and HP...write to both the local Manager of Comet, Comet's Head office Chief Executive and HP's Chief Executive. Explain your whole ordeal, and demand compensation for your time, trouble and costs of sorting this all out, as well as any expenses you have incurred (if any). Suitable compensation would be in the region of 50-100 quid. I have found that unless you approach ALL these parties and CC everyone in to the letter, you won't get a toffee...not even an apology, which you should also request. Basically, if you don't tell them what they are doing wrong and make it sting, they won't change a thing.

You might want to check, but I thought goods that bust within 28 days of purchase were covered by immediate straight exchange, but I could be wrong.

Dead link sadly, but I'm gonna write to HP and Comet when I get my laptop back otherwise they might just hold onto it even longer.

    is the new link
would be a good idea to find out your rights before you approach them again - stop them trying to stall/bluff you

Lev's carbon copy idea is the way to go, put the pressure on them
the sooner you do it, the sooner you will get some satisfaction

Hp at least should be responsive, its their product - their reputation on the line

    Good luck :major

I'd be inclined to send them something like this.

send by recorded delivery so you can prove they've received it.
