I have a sony pcg-k33 and I just recently downloaded clear info to start monitoring my cpu. I got it up and running and it says that all 3 temp sensors are running at 255 degrees C! Is this posibly right? I started running cpu eat n' cool, and set everything to max cooling on it, but it hasn't dropped the temp one degree over about 30 minutes. Is clear info just reading the temp wrong?

    Thanks,
    Shane

I have now run everest ultimate on the laptop, found the cpu temp at 72 celcius. Also discovered that the processor is a P4 prescott. Is 72 normal? Is there anything I can do to make it run cooler?

    Thanks,
    Shane

They're known to go up to 90c but that's critical shut down temperature. Are you running any major applications like games or video/image editing?

The 72 degree reading was when I was running everest, cpu eat n' cool, and internet explorer. Nothing else.

woh, is your laptop solid or is it a smoldering pile of goo?

Firstly that Clear Info program must be crap, if it is saying your sys is 255C we are talking boiling point of many metals but especially silicon and gold (major components of your chip). Remove that app from your sys as it is giving VERY misinforming info. EVERESTT is the go.

    How old is your sys?
How is your sys running? Is the thermal throttling kicking in (purposefully to protect your chip) and slowing your systems activity down significantly?? I have had similar problems with my desktop and this is what was occurring with my sys. I have posted the thread:

P4E 3.0GHz Prescott overheat, complete sys STILL UNDER WARRANTY, want tech specs.

    My CPU is:

    Intel P4E, 3.00 GHz 3006 MHz 1Mb L2 Cache (800FSB socket 478 Prescott CPU with HT*), sSpec No.: SL7PM

Since then I have obtained the specs on my chip, gone to Intel and found that its CRITICAL Temp Threshold is 70C (actually 69.1C) and the literature states that operating at temps of 70C and greater will significantly shorten the life of the chip!!!!! So although Prescott have a reputation for running hot I was getting greater than 70C and have taken it back to the shop.

Thankfully my sys is still under warranty and is going back to the shop again in a few days (when they open again).

So firstly ID the specs of your CPU and go to Intels web site:

    http://www.intel.com/products/browse/processor.htm

If you dont know the specs of your chip there are several good programs on this site and others to give you excellent ball park specs.

    eg. OverSoft CPU Informer

If your sys is not under warranty and you find it is running hotter than manufacters guidelines (apparently laptops will run hotter than desktops?!? advice from someone on this site?? but I would check Intels specs on this). What the shop first did to mine was refresh/replace the thermal paste on the heatsink (Arctic Silver gets a good rap) which lowered idle temp by 5C to 55C (still to high from advice I have sought and have hit 70C with lowend activity). So conduct some research into this if you consider DIY (I am a beginner and will highlight options I state CLEARLY I AM NOT MAKING RECOMMENDATIONS) (people on this site have good info) and clean the CPU fan etc while you are at it.

Other options is to consider the fan setup. I have one on the CPU one side mounted in the case directing onto CPU and one rear mounted extraction, these are all 80mm and many discuss placing 120mm to improve either inlet or outlet.

Upgrade to better heatsink (apparently Intel standard are very average).

From talking to local comp shops (not the point of purchase) they say that the first point of call maybe a BIOS upgrade, then to check the motherboard
and the CPU last of all. Apparently out of the whole sys the CPU has the most rigorous quality control during production and thus deemed the least likely to fail (their opinions I honestly dont know)

72C is very high for lowend activity and I think will lead to the death of your chip.

Laptops runs considerably hotter than desktops.

I would check on the warranty though, just to be safe.
