Laptop Video Problem

I have a laptop that was provided to me by my workplace. The laptop got stolen but then the police found it about 3 months after it was stolen.

I am having now problems with the laptop. When I turn it on, nothing seems to appear on the monitor, when I press Esc the laptop turns off. If I press any other button it doesn't do anything and when I put the bios passwod it also doesn't do anything (I cannot see anything on the screen, I just assume that the bios password is the first thing there)

When I got it back my laptop was running ok, off the internet. Because my laptop was from my former employer it contains servers that track the maintenance of the laptop as well as provides updates and manages a backup of the files on a remote server. Since I am no longer an employee, there was a problem with these applications. (So I would turn off wireless, then close all the applications and then turn on wireless to use the internet)

Problem started when a friend came over and borrowed the laptop but did not turn off all the applications. Since my logins were taken off when I got laid off the applications have the computer name and address but does not recognize the login.

I am just wondering if someone knows how to fix this problem, about a month ago I would have to turn on my laptop many times to be able to see something and now I can't even do that.

Just to add to this I have just tried turning it on and off. And it did manage to go to windows vista, as soon as my desktop was coming up the screen went blue and then it went all dark. I tried connecting the vga out to the tv to see if I could see anything but still nothing.
I am at least trying to get in to create a back up of the files and then I will format it. But first I have to be able to see.

A linux live cd might give you access to the hard drive. Puppy Linux is rather easy to use. You download the iso and burn it to a cd with a program like IMGBurn, using the Verify option. Then put the cd in you optical drive (CD/DVD) and boot up the computer. That drive needs to be set first in the BIOS boot order or you may have problems. It usually is but you may need to access the BIOS at boot time to change the boot order. Once puppy is up and running you can mount any active drive and copy its contents to an external drive, partition. The program runs entirely in RAM and will only make changes to the hard drive if you tell it to.

    Just a thought, Got Root?

If you have no video, and you believe it is down to previous applications, then a simple way would be to remove the hard drive, and then see if you can get to the bios screen when you pressf2 , or, del, usually.
If you can get a screen showing then you should be able to rule out the video chip/card in the laptop.
If your hard driv is actually password locked, that is really difficult.
