laptop will only run xp and nothing else :-(

i have acer aspire 6920, 16 inch screen dual core 2ghz processor 4gig ddr2 ram ati 1gig add in video card 160gig sata hard drive ide blu ray drive, every time i try to re install vista or 7 or 8 windows it crashes at various points saying remove any newly installed hardware i have tried various hard drives and ram configurations, tried in compatability and ahci no different, am on bios version 1.14, i am ripping my hair out with this issue as i want windows 7, hope to get help soon.

 

We need specific errors to be certain, but its possible it is having trouble reading the disc. You can try installing from a USB flash drive, and if that succeeds, that the was the problem.
Windows XP is very small compared to 7 and 8, increasing chances of read errors.

In addition to that, XP (If memory serves) shipped on a CD. Windows 7 and 8 are on DVD media.
