Recently I uninstalled google chrome, after that internet explorer wouldnt work so I did system restore which failed for some reason and now i cant start up the laptop.
When started up Im taken to Windows Boot Manager, the info on it says :Windows failed to load because the kernel is missing or corrupt.
Ive tried to get into all the options eg safe mode, last known configuration etc,but it wont let me,done a hardwear check and its come up with nothing.I dont have an installation disk only have have a recovery disk but that does nothing either.
Is there any tool or program that i can download for free onto a disk.My os is Vista premium.
    Can anybody help?

    Hi and welcome to MG's,

Try using ultimate boot cd here.....

    http://majorgeeks.com/Ultimate_Boot_CD_d4981.html

and run some of the tools/utilities that are on the disc, it could probably fix the missing/corrupt kernel.

or you could try booting with a linux cd like puppy or ubutnu...

    http://www.ubuntu.com/download

this will allow you to run all the windows built in diag's and retrieve any important data/files/info onto an external drive. I am not very well versed in these matters but I am sure that some else will jump in to assist you further.

Another Hello from me as well
Now I suggest doing what "iain.t" suggested becasuse the UBCD is one of the best 3rd party CD's that is great for repairing a damaged Windows enviroment.

Before you do that I would suggest attempting to boot windows in Directory Restore Mode which is in the Windows boot manager, if it
dosn't come up you can view the rest of the options by pressing F8.

As stated you said you had a restore disk, this would be the quickest way of fixing your computer seems that disk as I
presume was the orginal one that came with the PC/Laptop unless you burnt it your self.
If it dosn't bother you you could always use that disk to reformat your harddrive(Removing all data) using that disk.
As you claimed that it does nothing I take it you just placed it in your CD drive, You are required to boot manually from
it sometimes from within your BIOS.
If you are using an Acer continiously pressing Alt+F10 brings you to the resote partition(Acer Only), HP offers a
similar service as so do many manufactors do but may vary.

One other thought is that perhaps the kernel is missing because Windows is looking in the wrong place. On the safe mode screen do you get the option to repair your computer? From there you should get a screen that will try to repair the startup files. Try letting it do that twice.

Give the model number of the laptop or google the model number and "specs" it should tell you if it is 32 or 64 bit Vista (if it doesn't specifically say 64bit then it is 32bit).

Then you would want to download the correct version of the disc (links at bottom of page). And unzip to get the ISO file to burn to disc as an image, using imgburn's "Write IMAGE file to disc" option or your favorite burning software.

After booting to the disc you could try a System Restore or the Startup Repair options.

You are going to need a boot disc of some type to do anything.

You could put the ISO on an empty formatted USB flash drive. A laptop that came with Vista should be able to boot from USB. Probably F12 at the manufacturer's splash screen will get you a boot menu.

You could try the instruction from this post to put the ISO on USB.

Another member sent me this note suggesting an easier method, which I have had a chance to try for myself yet, but should be worth a go if you don't like the command prompt.

The Advanced recovery options from the ISO are worth trying because there are several options besides just the system restore and startup repair. Chkdsk would be useful if a kernel file really is corrupt and there is also a method of manually rebuilding the bootloader if necessary.

Ive got the iso onto usb drive but am unable to boot from removable device,in fact im unable to boot from anything.ive tried changing boot priority in bios but all the options are disabled. In the left hand side it says "A device enclosed in parenthesis has been disabled in the corresponding type".
How do i enable it? thanx

    Hi,

I tried Yummi and couldn't get a Win7 ISO to boot (I got error 27) so I'm not sure how much success you will have with the USB.

Anyway, post #2 in this thread seems to indicate that that particular BIOS may only allow 4 boot items at a time. The instructions aren't very clear but I would guess you would disable Automatic mode and then move USB up the list or enable it depending on how the screens read. You may have to disable another device to get an open slot in the four choices. You really only need hard drive, CD and USB would be my choices.

do you know what (A device enclosed in parenthesis has been disabled in the corresponding type) means and how i enable it ?

    From the post I referenced:

So you want to look in BIOS for Advanced then Drive Configuration. There you want to set Automatic to disabled. Then see if you can now manually edit the list of drives/devices--setting HD, USB and CD as bootable.

If you describe your choices under drive configuration maybe I can help out. Or if you set Automatic to disabled perhaps the screen showing the Boot Order/Devices will change and let you now choose which ones are enabled/disabled.

ok got it to boot from usb but no luck with yumi still getting blue screen

The manual instructions worked for me http://elmajdal.net/Win7/Installing_Windows_7_From_a_USB_Stick.aspx

Maybe your problem the first time with them was that the laptop wasn't set to boot from USB? I added a few instructions in this post: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=1665858&postcount=6

    *************
Does the laptop now boot from CD? If so then you could use a Linux distro to boot it using USB and then use its CD burner to burn the recovery disc to CD and then boot from that. (Confusing but an option if you really hate command prompt.)

ok we got the recovery disk to run but it stops half way through now iv got a white screen with error in big red letters ?

  20. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

I've never seen that. What make/model is your laptop?

What sequence of screens did you see from boot up on? It should be Windows is starting with the 4 color logo then Pick your language screen then you would choose Repair your Computer on the next screen. Can you get that far?

  21. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Oh, I see you got the computer manufacturer's recovery disc to boot. Give the make and model of laptop and I'll see what your recovery options are using that disc.

So you have already attempted a full factory recovery where you said it was OK to lose all your previous data/files? (Just want to make sure I understand where you are in the process.) If so I would try running it again. In the meantime I will look at the manual for that model.

You said you did a hardware test I guess that included a hard drive test? That would be the hardware piece most likely causing problems.

hmm not sure didnt see anything saying it would lose files it sed something about recover files

Sorry, I can't seem to get to the Asus support site right now--I keep getting an error. I'd like to read through the options in the manual so I know if the first recovery attempt formatted the partition or not. I'll post back when I get the manual.

F9 should take you to the recovery partition (see attached). You could try that if it is still intact. Did you try using the CD again and did it fail in the same place? One thought is that the recovery does overwrite your files so if the failed attempt got that far then your files are already gone. :(

trying the recovery disk again not seen the white screen ...is there a way to wipe HD and reinstall vista with disk ?

  32. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Technically, that is what the recovery disc is doing.

The first option is to wipe C: and put a new copy of Vista on.
The second option is to wipe the whole HD and make one large Vista partition.
Third option is to wipe whole HD and make a Vista partition and a D: partition (not sure if D: is recovery files or just a separate data partition)

All three should format C: and put a factory Vista image on the laptop. None of them is just a repair option.

Usually the two partition is handy to keep a seperqate partition for data, if wanted. If it has a recovery partition still (has not been wiped since new) then this will usually be ionly about 5gb.
The third option will create a partition 60% of hard drive, and a second partition of 40 %, and will not delete the recovery partition, normally.
As sach2 says all three options will wipe the old windows off.(format them.)
The manual can be downloaded from Asus- just type in vista , and you will get all the downloads

thnx for the help got recovery disk to work and installed drivers everything seems fine apart from it wont install the 113 updates and wont let me online lol says i have full connection

A least you have the OS installed and running. Check Device Manager to make sure you have your LAN and WLAN/wireless devices installed. You can get updated drivers from Asus site.

Have you tried using a wired connection? (One thought is if it knows it needs 113 updates it seems it must be connecting to Windows Update somehow. Maybe try Firefox to make sure your internet problem isn't just IE related.)

Possibilty that your antivirus, or, firewall is blocking them.
You may need to look at your firewall settings , and get them to allow downloads.
Have you checked in Device manager to see if there are any yellow astorisks- denoting a missing driver.
Sometimes the chipset driver has given me that problem - so check the chipset driver, too
