    Hi

This problem started about a week ago. When I turn my computer off and then on with the HDD plugged in it hangs on the final window before the desktop appears.

The strange thing is this only happens when I have my external HDD plugged in.

If I simply do a 'restart' or unplug the HDD everything starts up smoothly.

    I am using XP SP3.

    Thanks for any help

    Uli

Check the boot order in the bios. Make sure it isn't trying to boot the usb drive.

Hi Shnerdly. Thankyou for your reply.

I'm afraid I'm not very tech savvy. Could you explain to me how to do that?

    Thanks

This problem seems to have been resolved by an Adaware scan - touch wood.

It found a dangerous file hidden it said was hidden by a harmless one.
