A month from tomorrow my mom is taking her 3 daughters to Vegas. This means me. I have never flown before and have claustrophobia. This should be a real fun trip..(sarcasm here). I am looking forward to being there, just not the trip.
What worries me is not the flight itself, but being locked in, knowing i can't get out.

Anyone else been thru this? Any advice?

Gal...go see your doc about beta blockers if your fear is so great. I've had friends who have done this in the past.

Vegas is great...you will have such an awesome time :D

get plenty drunk before you take off.... bring a walkman or some magazines, anything to take your mind off your phobia... once you realize how irrational your phobia is, and come to grips with the fact that nothing bad is going to happen to you, you'll be okay....

phobias are kind of ironic... you're scared of not being able to get out of a certain area but you're not actually scared of what might cause you to need to get out of a certain area.... see the twisted logic? you don't fear the negative stimulus, just not being able to escape...

I wouldn't get too drunk before you get on that plane. Maybe a cocktail to calm the nerves, but any more and you might yak during take off.

If you're the type to get sucked into books, try bringing one along that you know will suck you in. I always read when I fly and I get absorbed into good books. I frequently take a 5+ hour flight and look up from my book to realize that I'm landing. It's a nice feeling.

    Thanks for the help everyone.
I won't be drinking at all. I am sure I would lose it on the plane.
Not sure of a window seat either, as I need to be near where I could get out. Not climbing over people.
A book, headphones might help, but think I would be too nervous to pay attention to either.

One of my sisters suggested dramamine? She said she takes it for the take off and landing.

My mom and sisters have all flown before, so I know they'll be of help to me. They tell me the inside of a plane is big and so with being able to look out windows, and with people moving around, I should be ok.

I agree gal..the thought of being drunk AND trying to deal with my phobia doesn't sounds like a good idea at all. I'd rather be totally straight and in control of my freaking out ;)
