    Hi,

My mum bought a computer off her friend and asked me to transfer her files, the machine has been riddled with virus, most of which I have been able to remove. I have one last problem(i think) and I don't know how to dispose of it.

Everytime I open internet explorer for the first time, a windows self extractor comes up asking me to install (it doesnt say what) into the system32 folder. I cancel this

Then when I am online, at various intervals a series of popups appear, they are always the same, vodaphone, casino etc.

I have followed all the steps reccomended in this site. Can you help?

Here is my hijack this log:

    Edit: remoevd inline HJT log

PLease tell me there is away to stop this its drive me batty!!

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Hijackthis is just one part of the malware removals process and the last scan to run as it is good but will not find all malware thats infesting your PC, so best bet is to run the below guide as laid out and attach the requested logs,

    -----------------------------

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

the getrunkey.bat and shownew.bat weren't compatible with this system

Well it was win xp home edition, but things have went from bad to disastrous, I intalled microsoft updates as this p.c is two years old but has hardly been used, so I thought installing the security updates would help. After this I couldnt boot into windows or even safe mode, machine justkeeps booting after it gets to windows screen. So I tried my recovery disc (ghost image) which says worked but I still cant get into windows, turns out the machine isnt recognising the c: drive now so I really am in a muggle, I assume all the viruses will have gone but now I have nothing. I dont need to rescue any data off the disk as there was nothing important on it just programs which I have on disc, but the ghost image was from my own p.c (they are both win xp home) and I just dont know what to do now:(

If anyone has any ideas please help, I am in a right muddle

    Laurie

ok your problems are no longer malware! I suggest you post in the software forum. Theres a lot more people available there to help you, If you explain your problem in detail then I'm sure one of the guys over there can help you. Feel free to reference this thread if you need too.
