I have not checked in lately to see what is new and hot, and I know you Geeks all have your own ideas, so I would like to hear you sound off about your favorite firewalls, anti-virus programs, anti-spyware/adware programs, and other programs you find useful for Windows 7. Look forward to researching your input. Right now I am using Zone Alarm (have used it since it came out thanks to MajorGeeks), Panda anti-virus because it seems to be very easy on the system, and of course Firefox for its built in security measures. SpywareBlaster will be added today.

    Thanks for any input.

    -Avira Anti Virus
    -MBAM Pro (for active protection)
    -SAS
    -Privatefirewall 7.0

The panda antivirus is a nice idea, and I used it for a short time, but think about it. The virus signatures are stored on the cloud, requiring an internet connection for access. Many malware infections disconnect or block your internet access, thus rendering (i assume) Panda useless. If I am wrong about this, please someone let me know, as I liked the low maintenance aspect of the Panda A/V .
Make sure you keep up with all your Windows updates.

Unfortunately I do not think that MBAM is still free, which really bytes. I am not sure what SAS is. I will check out Private firewall 7.0. If Panda is indeed open to faults such as you described I will have to seek another anti-virus. AVG would be next in line, simply because I know it and have used it extensively in the past. Long download though, even at 36MBps.

I might try out Private firewall. I do not believe it is all that different than Zone Alarm in determining habits and "learning", but I do like the sound of 24 hour updating and monitoring on the fly.

    I use:
    Avast AV
    MBAM Pro (not free)
    PC Tools FW
    SpywareBlaster
    SuperAntispyware

No-Script as an addon for Firefox

I don't have Windows 7 so not sure if some of them mentioned above would work on 7.

Lastly, many Fx users still get viruses/malware on their machines so in essence, it's the user who needs to update to the latest security updates in the browsers as well as using their brains when surfing.

Avira, Spybot and default Windows 7 firewall and Bit defender I believe. I'm getting very lazy with this OS but I haven't gotten infected yet, then again I'm not click happy either and practice 'safe surfing' hygiene at all times.:major Some folks find that Avira gives off too many false positives but I haven't had one in four years. They all screw up sooner or later in that dept.

MBAM is free. They do have a PRO version that is not, which offers active protection and automatic updating.
I forgot to mention i use Firefox with adblock plus, and Flashblock .

I am using MSE and free edition of Avira antivir , i am very carefull where site i visit every day , it's the only solution , whatever you are using in your machine is very easy to be infected by a virus if you aren't concetrate what sites you visit !! :cool

Avira seems to be doing better with false positives than in previous years.

    I got in!!!!!!!

I've been trying to get in since yesterday afternoon. A hacker got into my Gmail and since then he has changed several things. I just saw him leave the house so I guess I'm in control for a few minutes.

I changed to Comodo anti virus but the geek part of it that they offer as a free trial doesn't work. It insists on being paid immediately. I went on live chat with one of their geeks (Steven) and he could offer no help.

I'm off to change my password fast.

LOL My computer was taken over and I couldn't access any sites. The hacker went out and I managed to get in and change a few things to make it harder for him to get me later.

The police are on the case.

Okay, I have decided on Microsoft Security Essentials, Malwarebytes, PSI, Advanced System Care, and IOBit Malware Fighter. I also have Panda Anti-Virus installed. If any of these are redundant or could otherwise cause issues working together please let me know.

My advice is. Only have one anti-virus program installed if you have more then one it will cause conflicts between them and the same goes for firewalls other than that you are good to go.

also with you security I would suggest in getting smart defrag 2 as this will also keep you computer running fast and smooth.

    Greetings, comperroruter.

One more free security consideration: surf the 'net as a limited user. ;)

True. I tend to do little surfing. After finding the sites I need and like years ago, I mainly visit them.

Right now I have Comodo Antivirus, Advanced Care System4, CCleaner and Advanced Spyware. Do I need anything else? It would have to be free, I'm afraid.

    Glad-to-be-back Lavender
