Latest Processor / Motherboard Information

Howdy.

So 8 years ago a built my own PC which has finally come to the end of the road. I'm attempting a full upgrade (almost) and have a good understanding of the older technologies, but am interested in learning about the underlying ins and outs of today's processors and motherboards...what the decisions are between Intel, AMD, etc. and what's the newest.

I've been searching for some good info on this but haven't really found any. Can anyone recommend a good resource to catch me up to date on the latest 5 years or so of hardware buying decisions? (A tall order, I know.)
