Well, I have come across this site that says they give away a free alienware laptop, iPods, Macs, etc if you refer 25 people and they sign up for the offers.

I'm not advertising it, but I was wondering what are people's experiences with these sort of sites. Apparently, this site was also mentioned on BBC a long time ago, but when I search on google, it links me to a BBC page, however it says the page has been removed.

Nothing is ever free, especially the likes of high end PCs, you have to sign up 25 people, who are going to be friends.. don't think they will be impressed at their email address being sold off for spam, which is excatly what these companies do.

Yes it was mentioned on the BBC news page as a phenomenon sweeping the USA that was to hit the UK, and not indorsing the site in any way, however does now seem strange that they have pulled the page?

Halo, you are right, it's not exactly free but I ommited that as I considered it a detail. You basically have to fill in one of these offers (dvd rentals, domain hosting) and when all the 25 people you refered do the same, you are elligible to receive your laptop, etc. (if they keep their word). However, what made me ponder was that these offers aren't some random companies I never heard off, for example the fasthost company was one of them, easyjet, etc.
From what I found out so far, when you go to sign up to these sites, they have a referid, so then later on, the giveaway site knows who you signed up for. Everything seems very legit and reasonable but as you said, nothing is free on the internet ;).

As for selling your e-mail address, as mentioned in that article, I think it's a fair compromise to make if you are actually GOING to receive the laptop. When I signed up, I used a false address, of course as I don't trust most stuff on the internet but I've yet to see if it would actually work.

Furthermore, people sell these on ebay and when you look in their feedback, they actually get positive saying that it works, after 1-2 months after the sale. Of course, this could be faked as well, but in my opinion, it's worth giving it a go, seeing that now it's spreaded into the UK as well, not only US. In the end, there must still be people who receive these goods ;).

There is one truth, whether one pursues getting scammed or not.

We don't allow spam/scam links on the forum, and the original post has been edited to reflect that policy.
