Launching AVG at startup

    Greetings,

I would like to inquire as to a way to launch AVG (anti-virus) at startup in Windows 2000. There does not appear to be a tab or place in the program that allows it to launch at startup automatically. Thank you!

AVG seems to assume you leave your PC on all the time and the Scheduler handles updates and running tests at times of your choosing. There is a check box in Test Center -> Scheduler -> Edit Schedule for task type "Test" that forces a test immediately on start up if the machine has been off during the scheduled test time. The question remains, though, does it attempt to do an update first? Also, I assume you are, like me, using the free edition-- maybe the pro version has the precise feature you seek.

Thanks for your quick reply. Yes, I am speaking about the free edition, however, my question was regarding the initial *startup* function of AVG (sorry I did not make that point too clear). In other words, not the scheduling feature of it to run at certain times of the day, but rather that the program itself would appear on the task bar, along with the others, as soon as the computer boots up. Is there a way to tweak it to do this without manually going to find the program, launching it and then minimizing it to the task bar each time? Thanks again!

    HI!
This problem could be from other security software you have stopping AVG from loading at startup.
What other programs do you have?
    Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware/ Ad Watch?...etc., etc.
I ran across a few posts about this problem and if unable to determine which program is stopping it from loading the solution was to uninstall AVG and reinstall it.
    But first:
There should also be a setting somewhere within AVG to have it start when Windows starts...have a look for it.
    :)

Are you saying all you want the program to do is open at start up, and minimize to the taskbar (not the system tray), but not to run a test?

I believe he meant System Tray, by the clock.
He wants it to load when Windows loads, but for some reason it DOESN'T.
Correct me if I'm wrong, Micro Chip.

If you don't find the answer within AVG as others have suggested, you might try
    Starter from CodeStuff. http://codestuff.netfirms.com/news.shtml

This allows you to add / delete items to / from, your startup.
I use it often in XP Pro and have used it in W98SE, but no other OS'es. Bazza

    Hi Toni!

Thank you for your replies. Yes, you are right, what I want is for AVG to load when Windows loads but, as you say, for some reason it doesn't. I would like for it to go to the system tray by the clock and there must *surely* be a tag where this could be tweaked to do that. I can't imagine AVG programmers turning out this product without a tab to click to either Enable or Disable it from running at startup and going to the system tray when the computer boots up!

My antivirus+malware software has not interfered with AVG but something has gone awry somewhere and all I need is to find the tab in AVG to re-enable it.

Thanks to all who have replied. If anyone knows where this mysterious tab would be, I would surely appreciate knowing about it.

My guess is that the AVG authors figure an AV prog should be running all the time-- I haven't found and don't expect to find such an option in the program setup. Since AVG doeesn't appear in the StartUp group, there's got to be a registry entry invoking it, which I expect you may be missing. In XP, it's in the key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You may want to look in yours for something similar. If it's not there, perhaps a re-install of AVG is in order.

Are you running another antivirus program?
And what are the other programs you are running?
You should not try to run 2 antivirus programs at the same time or even have 2 installed. It causes conflicts.

There is a place in the program's options to turn it on and off, actually. Open AVG, click Control Center > AVG Resident Shield > Properties > Properties tab, if "Turn on AVG Resident Shield protection" is checked, it should be running.

Agreed. I've had AVG Free for years and it launches at startup just fine. Sorry but I don't recall what the settings are to make that happen.
