learn to program

Hello everyone, like this site alot from reading so far, I know almost nothing about all this stuff and want to learn. where would a beginner learn to make a very basic program? Or is that where I want to start? Please help the ignant man...:confused

 

Just about any introduction to computer programming is good, you probably wanna start out with one language so get like an intro to C++ or intro to Java or intro to HTML book. I've never used one but you could always use like HTML for Dummies and others from that series. Don't know if there are any good sites or anything to learn but I personally think a book would be better.

 

thanks for looking jjjirish05 from what I have read after asking the questions looks like people try c or java first and it seem like at least four or five langauges are better learn to be better programmer in the end I also seen stuff like linux or bsd unixes, but I'm sure them come later.

 

ya, most languages are fairly similar, and once you learn one it become a lot easier to learn more.... I agree starting with java or c++ is very common and helpful

 

now are there actual practice programs out there or do I really start just by making them?

 

Well if you get a book they'll have you make programs.... usually starting with a simple hello world program....

 

At my university they start you on a book called 'The Fundamentals of Programming Using Java' available here for £20/$36.

It's a theory first approach, objects later! This book is great and you learn loads! It tells you which software to download and you write a program within the first half hour!

 

Thanks for the replies and I will check this stuff out today when I get back on. The book Ill see if barnes and noble has it and just get it if they do.. Thanks to all again.
