left click onmost desktop icons, does't work

Win 7 64 bit
When I left click on most desktop icons, they don't work.
right clicking on open works fine. Elsewhere all works fine.
checked for viruses, spyware, etc. no problem.
rebuilt icons-no change

 

Try doing SFC /Scannow in the command prompt.There might be errors.

 

Tried sfc /scannow already.

Couple of quick questions:

1. Do you get a change in symptoms if you boot the machine into Safe Mode?

2. Do you get a change in symptoms if logged into another account?

 

Magically fixed after weeks of problems.

I don't believe in magic either. I did nothing out of the ordinary. I am an advanced user and had applied at least all the 'fixes' suggested. Finally after several weeks it just worked as before.

Just had a crazy thought: I had a Microsoft mouse once that sent me on some pretty silly goose chases with click problems - turned out to have a bad button switch and a semi-broken wire in the cable at the same time. Worth a look.

Hate things that disappear - they tend to pop back up at the worst times. Good luck.
