I recently had soem problems... and after virus checking etc. have managed to get rid of them... however AVG shield keeps picking up

    TrojanhorseBackDoor.generic2.TMP

While it doesnt seem to be doing anything its bugging me...

Ive run through the "Read me first" post. (the online scanners didnt work properly tho i dont think)

The "read me first" has found and got rid of some other stuff... and Spybot seach and destroy is picking up:

    coolWWWsearch.smartserach

Neither this nor the trojan will delete. Even tho both programs say they fix them. As i said ive run through the "read me first" so this is with system restore disabled. Since i recently reinstalled windows etc. im still on XP SP1 and dont want to upgrade until ive got everything fixed. Any help would be great :) (HJT log attached)

Have you run ALL the other steps of the READ & RUN ME now? You had not run all of them before. Like Windows Defender (or in your case you will need to run CounterSpy as the READ ME instructs and attach the CounterSpy log) and run any other scans you may have missed. If you have finished all the other scans (CounterSpy too), continue with the below. Otherwise finish the other steps first.

Uninstall Spybot!!!!! You installed it here:
    D:\Documents and Settings\Patrick\Desktop\Anti-Cirus\SpyBot\SDHelper.dll

This is not the correct way to install programs like this. Then reintsall it to the proper default folder in \Program Files as the install recommends. Installing programs to your Desktop will make them unusable in other accounts and they do not belong there any. Documents and Settings is for documents and settings not programs!

Now click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'. On the page that opens, scroll down to Windows Service Manager ... then right click the entry, select 'Properties' and press 'Stop Service'. When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the 'Start-up Type' to 'Disabled'. Press 'OK' until you get back to Windows.

Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the "None of the above, just start the program" button at the bottom of the choices. At the lower right, click on the 'Config" button, and then the Misc tools' button ... select 'Delete an NT Service" ... copy/paste the following into the box that opens, and press "OK":

    WSCM

If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.

Now exit HJT and reboot when it tells you it needs to.

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {77701e16-9bfe-4b63-a5b4-7bd156758a37} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: winapi32.MyBHO - {AF79D4A2-725D-4627-9E34-08C04833D798} - D:\WINDOWS\System32\winapi32.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {e52dedbb-d168-4bdb-b229-c48160800e81} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adware.Srv32] D:\WINDOWS\System32\runsrv32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Transponder] D:\WINDOWS\System32\susp.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    D:\WINDOWS\System32\winapi32.dll
    D:\WINDOWS\System32\runsrv32.exe
    D:\WINDOWS\System32\susp.exe
    D:\WINDOWS\BTGrab.dll
    D:\WINDOWS\dlmax.dll
    D:\WINDOWS\susp.exe
D:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe <--- only delete service.exe if found. DO NOT delete services.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Having probles getting counter-spy to work will keep trying tho. May try installing SP2 and doing it.

In the mean time: have reinstalled Spybot. The path you posted is where it was installed which is my desktop. I only use one account so it was installed when i there when i was trying to sort out the computer.

Windows service manager was disabled: startup is now also disabled.

Ive done HJT as you have asked.

In safe mode i couldnt delete:

    D:\WINDOWS\susp.exe
    D:\WINDOWS\System32\runsrv32.exe

and they wernt in task manager to stop nor where they read only.

The following wernt anywhere to be found:
    D:\WINDOWS\System32\winapi32.dll
    D:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe
    D:\WINDOWS\System32\susp.exe

Computer stopped playing up after the initial virus scans. Before id posted but i know things are still lurking. As bit and bobs keep getting picked up on AVG shield etc.

Rest of your post went well :) New HJT log is attached. Thx in advance!

I see you installed Win XP SP2. It was not really a good idea to do this yet. If a PC is infected with malware when doing this upgrade, you can have all kinds of problems. Perhaps you installed it after doing my last fixes which removed most of your active malware.

Now we need to find out why those two other files would not delete.

Run the below procedure and attach the runkeys.txt log.

    Using GetRunKey

Now download & run Blacklight Beta
    • Hit I accept. It will take you to download page.
    • Download blbeta.exe and save it to the Desktop.
    • Once saved... double click blbeta.exe to install the program.
    • Click accept agreement and Click scan
This app too may fire off a warning from antivirus. Let the driver load.
      Wait for it to finish.
    • If it displays any items...don't do anything with them yet. Just hit exit (close)
    • It will drop a log on Desktop that starts with fsbl....big number
Please attach the Blacklight log file here.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Now download - Pocket KillBox

Extract it to its own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate it later to run it.

Run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click OK.

Paste the below filenames into KILL BOX one at a time. Check mark the box that says "Delete on Reboot" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) Click the RED X and it will ask you to confirm the file for deletion…say YES and when the next box opens prompting you to reboot now...click NO...and proceed with the next file. Once you get to the last one click YES and it will reboot.
    D:\windows\system32\runsrv32.dll
    D:\windows\system32\runsrv32.exe
    D:\WINDOWS\system32\susp.exe
    D:\WINDOWS\susp.exe

If Killbox does not reboot or you get a Pending Operations type error message just reboot your PC yourself. However BOOT INTO SAFE MODE during this reboot and do not run anything but what I request. DO NOT open any browsers!

Run Windows Explorer and double check to make sure the below files are all deleted (some we already got with killbox):
    D:\windows\system32\runsrv32.dll
    D:\windows\system32\runsrv32.exe
    D:\WINDOWS\system32\susp.exe
    D:\WINDOWS\susp.exe

Now reboot into normal mode and let me know how things went. Also tell me how things are working.

    You're welcome.

    One more step!

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop (yes overwrite the previous file). Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
And the below file should be deleted if found:
    D:\WINDOWS\System32\taskdir.exe

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:

How to Protect yourself from malware!

You tell me! ;) How is it running? Based on what I have seen in the posted logs, you are clean and that is why I gave you the final steps of toggling System Restore and running the How to protect thread.

Eeeeeeeeek I appear to ahve been wrong :(

AVG shield is still picking up a trojan:

    Trojan Horse Downloader.Generic.ZFW

however the path is in the Hijackthis folder :S ?

in a backup? Can i delete that simply as its a reg. backup?

  16. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

No! You were correct. You are still clean. Things in the HJT backup folder are not problems. But yes you can delete the backups since you do not need them.
