[font=&quot]Ok So I am wondering what is the best service to use to download music?
I am sure I will get lots of different answers but just want some opinions.
What is my best option while not paying to much.
    Thanks

I know that www.mp3.com use to have some great non-signed bands with free mp3's for download. Not sure if this is the case nowadays, since they totally redesigned their website (I refuse to go back since the big change).

Also, www.acidplanet.com has quite a bit of music made from acid (loop based music program). Quite a bit of it is very professional sounding.

I too now all of a sudden have interest in this topic. I've been recruited to find my wife's cousin the best music download service on the internet. Now, there are pay services like napster and real rhapsody that charge you a flat rate fee for unlimited downloads. The catch so far as i've seen is that you must continue with the service to have access to the files that you downloaded and you must use a compatible mp3 player. But I'm a bit confused - both of those sites offer you an option to make CD's out of your downloaded music. So, can't you just download an unlimited amount of songs and burn them to cds??? Unfortunately both of the websites are suspiciously without a ton of information if you know what I mean. Would these cds be playable in any standard player? If that's the case, then I would think those sites would be a great deal. But, I do suspect I'm missing something in the fine print. Can anyone comment on these services? Are they worth it??

WinMX is one, all downloads are free. It is legal for you to download the music. Also using this you can't be sure of getting the highest quality downloads.

WinMX is likely to get you busted. I'm asking about legal downloads.

I don't know where you get that from!

Yes, it's free, but that's because it's pirated files mainly.

WinMX is just a P2P application, and the overwhelming majority of files are pirated and not legal.

EDIT: As far as music you download (legally), most are protected with DRM licences and have restrictions on how many times they can be played or installed etc.

I won't buy any downloads that I can't use the way I want.

Has anyone really challenged the record industry about this?

They, (record industry) have been filing claims against many people and i'm sure at least one of them has fought back, but i haven't heard or read about it.

Not to bring up an old subject, but it's time someone stood up to them...mho.

My guess is people fighting back...have lost. Unless someone wins, you won't hear about it.

As for someone standing up to them...thats kind of like asking someone to step down and not prosecute the thieves that just robbed their store. Kind of silly, if you ask me.

Someone standing up to them would be like a thief fighting for his right to rob someone.

Everyone sued has settled out of court, so the issue has yet to be decided in a court of law.

They have probably settled because they agreed to pay an amount of money and/or not to download/upload music. In other words, they didn't stand a chance.

As long as copyright is legal, there is nothing to "stand up to", they have the law on their side.

What is the normal fee for unlimted downloads though....it really seems worth it in a way.
I can't see spending $.99 for one song download.
The way my wife use to download music this could get a little expensive.
and then again you can do it the free way but I just don't want to be one of the unlucky guys who gets busted...that is the last thing we need.
    Thanks in advance

you can use winmx for downloading music for free and its still legal cause the p2p server is located somewhere in canada. so therefore in some loophole that noone looks at except a few people it is still legal only on the winmx server cause its in canada.

We here at MG actively discourge piracy. Doesn't matter were the serve is, it is still illegal to download copyright material.

  16. theefool

Yes, but if you are in the US of A, it is still illegal. I can't believe you don't understand this.

Yep it all depends where you live as to wether it's legal to download music for free (WinMX for example). In certain countries it is legal to download off WinMX... iTunes is good but I think I'd much rather just go to my nearest music store and buy CDs. Having the real cd is so much nicer! Even if I am just going to rip it to mp3 for my mp3 player.

Well, IMO the discussion is fine, if not informative. I'm going to let it slide for now, but I'll ask the other mods to take a look as well.

First off The reason I even started this thread was to find a legal way of doing this...I am not sure why there are some people out there trying to use some P2P Software....that is totally not the point of my original question. It was to see what is the best route to go and pay for downloads legally.

Technically -- It's not illegal to download copyrighted material. It is illegal to share it or to assist others in violating a copyright.

  22. master-s

    master-s Private E-2

This is true it is just that if you are downloading with something like winmx or any other P2P software you are then assisting another in violating a copyright -- Technically.
I guess the proper thing if we lived in a world that did not have laws on sharing we would not have to worry about this at all.
To tell you the truth I don't see what has changed since I was a younger and even today.
You won't get busted for recording from the radio or even a online broadcasts...
to me it is all silly
anywho that is what I think anyway.

I use iTunes and Walmart Music Downloads, to DL mp3s, and I only DL from there if the song I am looking for isn't already on 1 of the 500+ music CDs I already own.

Yes CP technically it isn't illegal to DL copyrighted material, that still hasn't stopped the Recording Industry from going after the people who have DL'd copyrighted material. IMHO the peeps who DL copyrighted material in large amounts never intended to buy it in the first place.

They have only gone after people who have shared copyrighted material not downloaded. I';s a fine line but it is a distinct point...and a scary one at that.

Lets say you are clicking around and accidentally open a share up on your computer that has MP3's you made form a CD you owned in it. A war dirver comes by seesthe sahre and downloads the music, then tells the cops .... Guees whos gonna be paying the fine?

That's one of many reason's to stay away from P2P networks. CD's don't cost all that much and if you want the albumn buy it. If you only want a few songs then DL those from a pay service. I'm not going to pay any fines to anyone.

    Ok, a mod has stepped in. Some of you need to learn to read a question and then properly answer it, as opposed to answering with your own philosophies or opinions. We dont care. The topic creater DOES NOT CARE, he was pretty damn clear about that, yet you persist. All you do is make this forum look bad, not to mention yourself. When you start making us look bad, I step in. Answer the mans question, or stay out of the thread. Now, I will proceed to lead by example;

There are a couple of big players out there, Rhapsody and Napster, for example. I have used Napster, still have an account, and easily burn multiple CD's very easily. Good song selection as well. Of course, a good idea is to check any websites artist listing before joining to be sure they have what you want. At the end of the day, I prefer to buy CD's complete, but to buy individual tracks, these services work really well.

    Thanks Major Attitude!
I will take a look ino these services.
I have not heard of Rhapsody and will look into this one and Napster some more.
    Thanks again.

    PS.
This is one of the best help forums I have found Keep up the good work!

Sorry MA. Somehow I started to get in side dialog with CP. To the origanl poster's question I use iTunes and Walmart Music download, at 99 cents a DL could get a tad expensive.

Thanks for switching the topic back MA. So, let me get this straight.... if you use napster, you pay $15.00 a month and you can burn these tracks onto a regular cd? Hmmmm... I think thats much better than paying 99 cents through itunes.

  31. Corporal Punishment

Corporal Punishment Head of Software Shenanigans Staff Member

I'm sure I'll get corrected if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that you 15.00 version was for use on your machine or portable MP3 player. If you want to burn the mp3, it's 99 cents per song.

  32. capn_caveman

    capn_caveman Sergeant

ahhhh....now that is starting to make sense.... the files you download under the 15 dollar plan are files that can only be decoded by compatible players... the ones that you can burn to a cd cost much more - 99 cents each. I was suspecting something like this would be the case.... was too good to be true. In the case where you really want to make playable cd's to play in a standard player, would it just be better to go with itunes and pay 99 cents a song without signing up for a monthly fee?

  33. master-s

    master-s Private E-2

Well it all really depends on what you are looking for. At this moment I have to burn CD's because I don't have an ipod or anything like that. I do hope to get an mp3 player in good time but it may be while...so it looks like maybe I will go with itunes if that is the case.

I just need to really look and see if they even carry the kind of music I want to get...Do you guys know if they carry just about anything or is it just top hits...Do they have a lot of no name bands...
I guess I could do this research my self but I am just being lazy :)
thanks for all of your input.
