LI error

I searched, but didn't find anything about this topic - that doesn't bode well for me, does it? :cry

I just cracked my case, and installed a couple 500G seagate drives, and a raid card. In the process, I had to move my existing HDD, in order to make everything fit. I followed the directions in the instructions for install of the card, powering on and off, as directed.

    At least I tried to...

As soon as I powered it up for the first time (sans new HDD's, but with card installed), the computer tried to boot from the CD (Well DVD, technically), and when it found no disk in the drive, gave me the two letters - "LI", and hung.

So I uninstalled the hardware that I had installed, a rosewell raid card, and powered up. Same symptom - just hangs. Then I swapped the position on the IDE ribbon cable for the C drive. Same symptom. I wiggled the RAM, and powered up - this time I got a blank screen. I took the RAM out and reseated it, and I was back to the "LI" hang.

Everything I find in a google search talks about linux, but I am running windows 2k sp4.

The computer was functioning great before this, as it was a fresh reinstall of win2k, because of a failed HDD three weeks ago. Could the failed HDD, the blank screen because of poorly seated RAM, and the LI error all be related?

What the devil is an LI error all about, anyways?

    Thanks, as always,

I think the "LI" is the start of a larger word, but the system is freezing before the entire word is spelled out. Have you removed all the new hardware completely and gone back to the original setup with only the functioning Win2000 hard drive hooked up? Have you changed the boot order in BIOS to go to the Win2000 hard drive first? If so, and you get this working, then re-install the new hardware, but keep it set up to boot to the Win2000 drive first. Then when Windows loads up, you can use whatever utilities needed to get the 2 new drives set up and partitioned/formatted. Setting up a RAID using a PCI RAID controller can be very tricky, and I have run in to some motherboards where it is just impossible due to the way the BIOS works. If the BIOS does not have an option for "Bootable Add-In Cards" then you may not be able to get it working just right... but then again, I could be wrong (hopefully LOL)

I think some wires were loose. After pulling and reseating all of the previously existing hardware connections, it started right up.

The RAID card is being recognized, but the two SATA drives on it are not. I am currently working through that issue, and your mentioning the BIOS makes me think I may need to have a look there.

I'll report back later, as I progress (or regress...)

    Thanks.

OK, BIOS doesn't show an option for add-in cards, as such...is there a specific wording I should be looking for?

    Thanks

I should probably start a new thread. The bios sees the RAID card during POST(?), and a message containing identification information about the card asks me to press F4, but then says it does not see any devices. If I understand this correctly, the RAID card is not seeing the HDD's, and therefore can not configure accordingly.

Unless you tell me not to, I will start a new thread this evening.

Thanks again for your help and patience.
