Killed my cable modem and my wireless router. So much for surge protection.

Anyway, when the cable guy replaced the modem, it still didn't work.

It's a 4 year old PC running windows Vista.

The cable guy said it was my ethernet card, as my laptop (used for this post) worked fine with the new modem.

(not worried about the router for now)

So I took the sides off the PC and it looks like the internet connects right to the motherboard.

    Does that make sense?

The PC works fine, just the internet connection was fried. I thought I would just be able to replace the ethernet card and it would be good to go, but if it's on the motherboard, I guess tha'ts a whole new ballgame.

Any advice? Any more info on the system needed?

    Thanks

You can buy network cards that go into the expansion ports on a motherboard. They are quite cheap now. If you tell us the make & model of your motherboard (should be written on the board near the bottom) or make/model of the computer someone can recommend which type you need.

Thanks. This is the stuff I can see on the board.

    PCI Express DDR 2 800

    G33T am VER 1.0 A

From the sticker on the front of the PC I get:

My PC is an ACER AM5620-E1204A

INTEL Quad Core 2 processer, and it says it has a 9 in 1 card reader

    There is lots of hope.

Depending on what you have installed in the slots in the computer, you can either use a PCI network card or a PCI-E network card.

Both types of card can be obtained very cheaply from a variety of sources. Just google/ebay search for the terms above and you will find plenty.

If you want help selecting a card, feel free to post back

Thank you. I will look for one of them in town today.

I may need some installation instructions...:-o

    Thanks again.
