Here's the deal. My sister loves to look at all here little friends massive myspace pages on the computer downstairs. This computer is hooked up via a wireless connection to our Actiontec DSL gateway with 54G capabilities. Now when I'm playing CS this gives me tons of lag because our DSL connection is only 256k/256k. Is there any way to limit the bandwidth usage of the wireless connection? Like maybe a setting I could change on the downstairs computer. Its using a Belkin 54G wireless card.

What is the exact model number of your router?
Some routers have a function to manage bandwidth, im not sure if yours has. Read the manual or play around in the settings to see if it does.

If it doesnt you could search google under the model number of your router and see if there is any firmware that has bandwidth settings.

If you dont want the risk of changing your firmware you could try this althought it costs $35.

I had a quick search on google, I find some new firmware for your modem but none of it mentions anything about allowing bandwidth limiting. But its late here and I have an exam tomorrow so I may of missed something. I will have a better look tomorrow afternoon (GMT).

I'm having a similar issue with a roommate of mine. Our router doesn't support 3rd party or otherwise firmware upgrades that allow me to limit bandwidth for a single user. I tried the trial version of Net Limiter but it only works if I can install it on my roommates computer. He is of the mindset that bandwidth should not be limited as he downloads massive amounts of media using multiple p2p clients. It seriously infringes on my ability to play Day of Defeat (pings of 300+). Is there a less overt way to limit bandwidth remotely on a local network?

Yes unplug his computer from the network when you wanna play :)

Or block P2P traffic entirely ;)

That'll annoy them significantly! And maybe convince them to stop leeching your bandwidth and get their own connection :p

You could invest in another uber cheap PC to act as a "gateway", so that when your friend goes onto the network they will connect to that before outgoing connections, and use that to limit bandwidth. This is fairly easy to do with a *nix box. And of course you can just use your router as the gateway, thus bypassing the restrictions ;)

    Sneaky eh?

Thanks for you replies. Unplugging his computer is not really an option as he is connected wirelessly (I'm wired). I have an old linux machine that I am considering using... do you know where I can find a guide to setting it up as to limit bandwidth use? Thanks again.

Is there anything out there like net limiter that doesn't cost money? and is there a windows setting that lets me set the bandwidth limit on a particular lan connection?
