Had high speed at 1.0, upgraded to 3.0. Now recieving 1.5. Complained to provider and they said we were to far out on the line to recieve 3.0. Wife has a chance to do online work and needs the 3.0, are their any mods or tweeks that would improve this.

    Hi

What Windows version are you using and what is your ISP and the service speed you have paid for, some ISPs state upto in their products, which means you can get from 0.5Mbit/s to the full 8Mbit/s or anything inbetween.

I take it this is ADSL/DSL and not Cable or Satellite internet?

If ADSL then do you have the DSL filters on all the phone sockets that are in the house?, could as a test unplug all phones and only have the one by the PC plugged in as other phones can cause line and speed issues.

Are you using a phone extention cable from socket to router? if so and possible move the PC and router to the main phone scoket and use the original small phone cable they supply and see if that clears this up as a long extention cable will reduce the speed, I had to move my router next to the socket and run a CAT5e cable from router to PC and speed jumped up.

Does your Router/Modem have firmware updates? check the makers site as these can help at times.

Could try this HERE to see how far you are from your exchange (although its as the crow flies so not a great test of ditance but gives a rough idea), if you are over 3km from exchange then speeds can be from 1-3 ish Mbit/s but to be more accurate you would need to enter your routers menus and look for something called Line Atttenuation and Noise db figures as they can be used to see what speed you may get,

Other issues can be how old the cabeling is from exchange to house as well as are the phone sockets old ones.

Try this and post the results, just choose the nearest test to your location http://www.speedtest.net/ (their are other speed tests but they are do a smilar job)

Using XP, with Verizon as our ISP, DSL. Have tried unpluging ext. phones and router, to run direct tp PC. 1.507 down/364 upload. Verizon says we are 12,000 feet from hub, and their is nothing more they can do. Wife has to have hard wire to work. Have not checked in to updates for router or modem. Router is Linksys WRT 110, and Modem is Westell 6100.
    Thank You

    Hi

Yes you are over 3km from exchange and 1.5Mbit/s maybe the best with the line you have, just with only the phone socket next to the PC plugged in plug a phone in and listen for crackles and noise on the line, if so ask Verizon if they can change the line gain to clean up the noise.

Try this is the address of a browser windows and hit enter, it should show a hidden set of details that list the line attenuation of many Linksys routers, not upto speed on Westell I'm afraid.

then if that works attach in a notepad doc the results as per this info HERE
