Linksys Wireless So Slow, Why

I am on a Thinkpad connected to an 80211b linksys access point and it is so slow. I am in the same room as the router. Only 10 feet away yet it is so slow. It doesnt seem as though it is the connection to the internet but that between the router and laptop.

The access point is in the closet behind a very thin wall with the door open so I doubt that would matter but in that closet I also have my cable box. Could this cause an issue?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Probably low bandwidth due to poor signal.

Wireless Router should be set in the open with No physical obstructions around it, put it in the closet does not make any sense.

    Hey
Try to check if you don't have set accidentally the wep encryption on. this
    could slow down the connection.
Another thing that you should check is the router setting for bandwidth.
Some routers can be set to work in a certain speed, not always the maximum speed.

why would someone limit the bandwidth setting on their router. who would want to limit the speed? How do I find this setting?

    Thanks.

first thing, please dont disable the encryption on the wireless connection. While it is true encryption can make the connection slower, anyone next to your house will be able to connect to your network without it.

Most wireless access points and routers have settings to enable "b" mode, "g" mode or "mixed". If you have G compatible equipment then choose this setting, this lets your network run at a max of 54Mb/s. "b" on the other hand runs at 11Mb/s

Wireless will always seem slower than a wired network.

Leave your encryption at WEP 128-bit. This will keep the average idiot out. It is true that is can be cracked in under 3 minutes, but it's better than nothing.

You cannot change between "b", "g", or "mixed" mode on an 802.11b router....

Play with the channels on the router. If you have interference on a particular channel (especially 6), this can cause it to be slower. Just remember to change this from a wired connection...
Another thing you can try to change is something called the preamble type. Change it to long and see if it helps.

Even though you're only running at a b standard (11Mbps), surfing the internet shouldn't be as slow as molassas. After all, not many people spoil themselves with internet faster than 5MB upstream!
