    That's funny.

Hey what distro are you using? I have been wanting to make the switch
but don't know what I should get.

I have been experimenting with Knoppix, but I would like to actually install something.

I'm still kind of shopping. I've been playing with the cygwin Unix emulator on windows as well as a bit of REAL unix via ssh at work. I've also been experimenting with Ubuntu on a friends computer, which probably the best distro I've seen and arguably the best around.

In the end though, I'll probably end up going with slackware or Damn Small Linux (DSL) because I need it to run on a fairly old system with 96megs of ram. The idea of using DSL is really exciting to me--far more exciting than slackware. But if I were to try it, I would be the only person I know running it, which makes me a tad nervous.

Haven't heard of Ubuntu. I will look into it. I am looking to put it on a new system that I don't have yet(can't decide what I want). I am trying to expand my knlowledge of computers and not be so dependent on windows.

It's getting to be that Ubuntu is almost the mainstay for Linux personal computing (servers are different of course).

There's a distro called Linspire (it used to be known as Lindows, if that gives you any idea of what we're dealing with here), which I've never used but is supposedly ALL about usability. You have to pay to use Linspire legally, but they recently put out something called Freespire. You might giveone of those a try after sorting out what's what.

I can't even follow what's based on what anymore. Freespire which is based on Linspire/Lindows which is based on Debian/Windows GUI which was based on the GNU OS/Linux Kernel which was all based on UNIX. SHEESH. Is it any wonder that people aren't ready to make the switch???

    LMAO

The first time I went here and saw how many distrobutions there were

I was very over overwhelmed and unmotivated.

Looking at different distrobutions is very time consuming. I have spent several hours just reading about different ones on that site.

I like Knoppix(Debian based I believe) so I will check out freespire and if I like it it might get linspire.

Ubuntu is a Debian based Distro, and a pretty good one at that. FreeSpire which is a community project, is a Ubuntu based Distro now.

What do I used? CentOS 4.3, since I required a Enterprise level solution.

using fedora core 5 here. Got rid of windows completely the other day. Still learning how to use all the console commands etc but brings the fun back to computing

    Kubuntu is da bom!!

Version 6.06 LTS (Long Term Support) installed in 30 mins. Win 2000 took about 2 hrs to find a driver, download, install boot. Find a driver, download, install, boot..... My Win software is not legit, Kubuntu is. Simple choice to format instead of pay $$$$$ I don't have.

It found everything on my unitwill laptop except the wireless card........ Websearch said that card is not Linux compatible with any distro.

Both Ubuntu, Kubuntu and the new Mandrake have a Live CD that installs as a RAM disk. Slow as pie if you have but 512 K but it lets you try before installing anything...

So, I booted Damn Small Linux (DSL) for the first time yestarday. It's a little...meh. They refer to themselves as "a work in process," which I suppose is accurate. It's going to take a little learning and fenagling, but I should be able to get it to do all the things I wanted it to do. Also, once it's set up properly, I'm going to be controlling it almost ENTIRELY through SSH (with the occasional VNC connection when I cant avoid it), so the GUI seems kind of unnecessary. The thing is obviously build for personal computing.

Does anyone happen to know a distro built for servers that will run on 96megs of RAM? GUI or commandline; either will do.

i'd run Ubuntu/Kubuntu (both installed) full-time if i could, but they won't detect my Dell AIO 924 printer (no specific driver...supposedly there's a Lexmark driver that'll work, but my printer is setup over wireless). I'm also very impressed with Suse Enterprise...it has XGL installed automatically and configuring it took less than 30 seconds.

Any package can be extended to run a server, 96MB of RAM is on the light side, 128MB is the minimum and have decent performance. Suse, Mandriva, Fedora, CentOS are enterprise level Distros. Those are going to require more RAM, to get decent, stable performance.

    ctrl+f gentoo NOT FOUND!

I can't believe gentoo hasnt' been mentioned yet. One of the best, if not the best, distros out there, with fantastic irc and forum support. You just need a high-end computer if you don't want to pull your hair out over compile times lol

I left Gentoo out intentionally. Definetly not a Distro for a novice or the faint of heart.
