    Hi,
Is there a straightforward way to set up mame / mame32 on linux?
I have it on windows but I want to use it on linux.
I use Ubuntu. I am very new to Linux and I want to get away from Windows.

    Thanks.

Mr Green here seems to have the answer(s)

    http://my.opera.com/Mr Green/blog/show.dml/171040

You might be better using Synaptic though, and search the options for 'consider recommended as dependencies' and tick it, to save some hassle.

You can also enable the required repositories easier in Synaptic

    Code:
    sudo synaptic
    should do it.

I can't remember if Umbongo comes with Synaptic, but you can install it if you get an error from the above command

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install synaptic

    hi,
I just found the correct folder but it says that I do not have permissions to write (put roms) into this folder.

    How can I solve this?

I am very new to linux but I want to know more.

    Thanks.

Probably because you don't have your NTFS file systems set to read/write.

You can enable it via the 'automatix' utility

    http://www.getautomatix.com/

which also fixes all the other shortcomings of Ubuntu regarding multimedia playback etc. Quite frankly, I think the default Ubuntu is awful for beginners and I can't understand it's popularity - or should I say hype.

I've heard the Ubuntu forums are popular, and I even heard one die hard cite that as a reason for Ubuntu being good !! To me it just means lots of people are having lots of problems with it

There are lots of better 'distros' which let you use 'root' (administrator) if you want to, have all the multimedia bells and whistles installed by default and give you read/write access to NTFS (Windows basically) partitions either as standard or it's easily enabled.

You can struggle on with Ubuntu, or change to something easier to use like PClinuxOS, Pardus or Parsix

    hi,
I did not figure out how to set automatix on how to move the mame roms
    - I moved them via the root password login instead.

I have PcLinuxOs 2007 on my old pc - it looks great.
I like both PcLinuxOs 2007 & Ubuntu so I'll stick with them both for now.

    Cheers.

I just checked out Pardus & Parsix on
    http://distrowatch.com
they are from Turkey & Iran.
    are they in English language?
have you tried them and if so what rating out of 10 for both?

Yes I've tried both and yes they both have English support

Parsix has a Gnome GUI like Ubuntu, and is Debian based (like Ubuntu)

It's just so much better though IMO 8/10 (I would give Ubuntu 6+)

Pardus isn't based on anything as far as I remember. Slick looking distro with all the tools you need by default 8+/10*

    Mepis is another to consider

I've tried practically the whole top 100 at distrowatch over the last 5 years or so, and believe me the hit point ranking has very little to do with how good a distro is. There are lots languishing in the lower half that are very good, like Granular currently at 93, which is based on (and improves upon in quite a few areas) the current number 1 PClinuxOS. I use it myself because I think it's superior

Then there's Blag at number 88 - a reworking of Fedora, but with non of the hassle of trying to get multimedia to work

And one of my favourite live CD's Wolvix - also well below halfway, and I could go on, but I'm bored now :p

    * Ratings are based on ease of use and usability for beginners btw
