People who care may have been following my saga of trying to install Linux onto a SATA drive.

To cut a long story shor,t I downloaded the PCLinuxOS ISO Live CD following numerous Debian, Fedora etc.

Boots fine. Now it won't even recognize a USB Mouse!

All I ask is a simple way to install ANY Linux distro onto a SAT drive partition and dual boot with XP Pro. LOL. What a joke

Don't blame linux because of your hardware troubles, pick a different distro. Try live cds before hand to check compatiblity, i haven't had any issues like you mention, and i have setup various linux's on many different servers probably close to 35 different pcs, with sata drives and usb mouse's no problems. I personally recommend www.opensuse.org for linux but thats me. Keep trying you will find one.

What are your hardware specs? I've been running Linux with USB mice autodetected since...years.

    Okay Adryn

Let me explain. And please do not take this personally.

As you no doubt are aware I originally posted a thread about the Fedora core 4 distros lack of support for SATA drives. I was directed to a site that explained why. Another directed me to the latest PCLinuxOS distro, which I downloaded and ran live. Fine. Except the bloody thing wouldn't recognize a USB mouse!

You are indeed correct. I should have provided more information of my level of expertise and hardware. Here it is. I am an Electronics Engineer of 20 years by profession, not strictly a software guy. Of course, my profession crosses many disciplines. I can program in assembler, Basic, Pascal C, C++ etc. and have many years of experience in Unix. I grew up with it. I am not a novice.

Now, imagine this for a moment. I am a novice computer user who has just hired a PC from a local monthly rental service. They have given me an Acer Aspire with a 160G SATA drive and a USB mouse. I have heard from a friend that Linux is the way to go so I download a popular distro. The installer doesn't recognize a SATA drive. Okay. Someone else has told me to try the PCLinuxOS Live CD. Fine. I download that. Doesn't recocognize a USB mouse. I give up.

My point is this. I am not an idiot. I am fully aware of how to get Linux running on my hardware. But what is the average punter supposed to think? Linux can claim all of the free and open source stuff it likes, but until it can become easy to install and use to the average punter, Windows will reign.

    Oh my.

    Excuse me sir!

Then why did you come here for help? You certainly threw your creds around as if we are not worthy. And yet, here we are, still without hardware specs. Plus...PCLOS supports USB mice FINE.

You are right though. Windows will reign supreme while there are those who are not knowledgeable enough about computers to use or run Linux. There is no argument there.

Maybe you need a more advanced distro and not one where everything is handed to you such as in Fedora, or PCLOS.

    I use Arch.

MarkC, I had a heck of a time getting the wireless network card on my Dell laptop to work. Tried several flavors of Linux, some worked, some did not. Now Fred_G is in NO way a Linux expert, but you might want to try some of the newer distros. Fedora Core 4 is from 2005 if I am not mistaken.

    Good luck!

Well, that certainly upset you Adryn. Can't stand up to some scrutiny?

Scrutiny from what? I use Linux just fine, with a USB mouse, no less. You still havent answered the question as to what hardware you have, and you are unable to get a newbie distro working, yet when others try to help, you throw out titles. I could care less about where you come from, or what you do.

You sound like a troublemaker to me. So...

Either let us help you, or move on with your superior knowledge knowing that you knew better than us mere mortals.

Now, if this is just an attempt to "scrutinize" me, then I will close the thread, and you can call youself the winner.

You're not worth talking to Adryn. You are a novice, not a professional

I'll keep that in mind as I use Linux, and you keep floundering. Thread closed.
