One of the most popular Linux distros is Linux Mint.

That's like asking "what is the best car?". There is no correct answer.

The best distro is the one that does what you need it to do.

Are you interested in trying a distro? If so, post what you do in Windows that you absolutely need to do in another OS.

I am another vote for linux mint but there is also Elementary OS but it is not free on their site you have to make a donation.

Even thought it means a lot of downloading, most Linux distros have live disks meaning you can sample them without having to install them. Find the one you like best and then install it.

Distrowatch shows the standard 1-2-3 listing of Mint, Debian, Ubuntu (respectively, in order of 'most downloaded') that seems almost standard the past two years or so, and, quite unlikely to change soon, IMO

I haven't used a new one for a while.
I loved Knoppix, Puppy Quickset (based off Puppy Japanese Edition).
After getting used to Gnome, I agree it's the better desktop (more reliable than KDE)...but I miss kstars!
