Linux?

    I would like to get into linux,done the search thing,still confused. I have ubuntu live burnt on a cd tried to boot it up but keep booting up XP. Also have spare HD. with about 38gb of free space,would like to make partion for linux maybe ubuntu or debian(any suggestions?) something free and easy. What size to make partion? How do I install it and boot into it? Where would I find an elementary tutorial? This forum has been a great source of info to me,thanks to all. B Chivers. :)
