Hi, I have a sony vaio laptop, fe880e. Bought it in 2007. In very good condition. Anyhow, I was opening the back of it while looking for the bios battery, and when I tried to take the hard drive out I broke a little piece from its corner which kept it firmly attached. This little piece was like a hook which helped keep the HD in place. Now when I attach the hard drive back, it stays there, but not as tight as it was before so the issue I have is that it gets detected by the laptop at times, and at other times it doesn't. I have to keep it a certain way so it can be detected by the laptop.

I don't have the little hook anymore (lost it on the floor) so I'm wondering if there is a replacement for these type of hooks (I don't know their proper name, but they keep the HD attached tightly to the laptop).

Could you think of anything I could do to keep the HD tightly attached to the laptop other than replacing the HD?

    Thank you!

    Hi

Apart from checking with Sony if they have any replacement parts for that hook/connector, you could possibly cut a peice of rubber or plastic to wedge in the gap behind the HDD too hold it in place.

Dont know the Vaio's too well and how they hold a HDD in the bay, but the Compaq and ACER I have would allow for a well cut peice of material to be wedged in behind the HDD to hold it in place.

I was able to solve this btw, and the issue wasn't the hook. Where the HD goes in, there was a small crack along the borders. I superglued the crack, waited, slid the HD back in and walah! Now we have to be really careful with it, but we can move it around and all normal operations are back to normal.
    SOLVED!

Glad you got it squared away, and thanks for posting back to tell everyone how it worked out.

Ahhh, super glue and duct tape (which I was going to suggest) . . . among the things that seperate us from the animals! :-D
