As I am sitting here, my meal cooking in the oven, waiting for my family to get home so we can eat, a friend of mine is sitting at a hospital bed saying good bye to her husband. Her in Washington, me, in Minnesota.
He is a truck driver, who about a week ago, while driving, his truck more or less lost it's back axle and overturned pinning him to the doghouse. After three hours, rescue got him out of the truck and he has been unconcious ever since after being airlifted to the hospital.
The family has a site on CaringBridge keeping everyone updated on his condition. Today, when I came home from work and read it, my heart became very heavy.
The family and the doctors have decided to pull life support, deciding he would not want to live like he is.
Has to be one of the hardest decisions they have ever had to make.
As I type this, an owl just hooted outside. It is 5:10 in the afternoon here. I have heard somewhere that when an owl hoots, someone dies. Anyone else hear this?

I guess this has gotten to me to thinking that my husband and I need to make a living will. Neither of us would want to live either in this condition. BUT, if it is not in writing, the family would have to make the ultimate decision.
    Take care all.

Big hugs Gal...I'm sorry for yours and your friend's pain and suffering right now.

The owl hooting signifying death is an old superstition, yes, as is this one...

When you hear an owl, to prevent bad luck, take off your clothes, turn them inside out and put them back on.

Personally I don't live by superstitions.

The decision to terminate life support is the MOST painful position one can be placed in...

A piece of my heart goes with you...

I'm so sorry about your friend gal1998. Been through that with family; probably the most heart wrenching decision that anyone can have to make.

And you're right. Everybody should have both regular wills and living wills. Makes things SO much clearer and simpler for everybody.

I procrastinated until I was diagnosed with cancer, then did mine online at LegalZoom.com. Was fairly painless, other than trying to decide who gets what, but the process itself was easy, and LegalZoom is cheaper than hiring a personal lawyer to help with them.
