loads of problems

I have a hp pavilion laptop dv6 with windows vista. I wanted to attach my hp all in one printer scanner fax machine to it. The printer is about 5 years old and ran great up until I disconnected it from my desk top and tried to install it to the laptop. Spent several hours with hp tech and finally he said it was the all in one that needed replacement. I then tried to attach my canon IP1700 and that also will not work with the laptop. Is there anyway I could use the canon printer with this laptop? I really am not able to purchase another printer. The all in one cost enough and now it doesn't work. Do you have any advise for me? I am not sure if something was tweaked because when I tried to get onto aol I was unable to. I had to remove and reinstall aol all over again. Not knowing that much about the workings of computers and hardware I need any advise I can get. I was told that the problem is in Windows Vista that I should upgrade to Windows 7. At this point, I don't know what to do.

There are Vista drivers available for the Canon IP1700 here, but you'll have to plug in your OS version (I didn't know if you have 64-bit or not) - I'd suggest downloading the proper driver, uninstalling everything relating to Canon, and installing the fresh software (usually, you need to install the software before physically attaching the printer)...

Installation of the HP may be problematic with Vista, especially since you've tried it with HP Support, so I'd recommend concentrating on getting the Canon up and running, tackle the HP and Vista-to-7 later...
