in the control Panel, in Network connections, there is a "Local Area Connection".. I was wondering, I use the XP built in Firewall, is it necessary to apply the firewall to the Local Area Connection? I'm not sure what this is anybody have info? thanks.

well First thing is that you should know that the XP vuilt in Firewall is more like a piee of swiss cheese
Seconly, you probably shouldn't as when you do you'd basicly be cutting your PC off from any connctions via network, which i assume you'd want <ie access this HDD from another pc>

If you want a firewall, use one of these

    Kerio
    outpost
    ZoneAlarm

Immaculate follow the above two posts.... ( iamien nicely put BTW ;) )

as the inbuilt firewall can stop incoming data packets but it will NOT stop anything going out, so if you have contracted a trojan/virus/spyware they will have access to contact their masters.

one thing give MS their due they have tried with this inbuilt firewall to cater for users security BUT it needs much more work to become a usable addition so thats where the software in Kodo's post is the route to take.

you guys are right the XP firewall is crap, but I'm lazy..

I have been using it for 4 months, and I have had no problems with it so I'm sticking with it...

I've tried Zone Alarm before, and had issues with it.
I don't even start my virus scanner with my comp. I never have it running. I just scan every file before I install it to my comp and never had a virus.

You know the saying, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Hey, aren't you the same "Immaculate" who has another post on this page about LOTS of problems?

Well, lots of us think that that saying is a very BAD one to follow if you're running a computer. Great for washing machines, though.
