    Laptop: Dell XPS M1210 running Windows Vista Home Premium Edition 32 bit
    Desktop: HP Pavilion running Windows XP version 2002 SP 3
    I am using a Comcast cable modem.
    Router: Linksys Wireless-G 2.4 GHz Model WRT54G v5
    ...
    [cable modem ->laptop]
    When my pipe is directly connected to the modem on my laptop I am able too browse the internet.

    [cable modem -> wireless router ~~> laptop]
    When I unhook the pipe from the laptop and plug the same pipe into my Linksys WRT54G V5 wireless router and then fire up the wireless antenna on my laptop I cannot connect. It does show that I am connected to the Linksys router but it shows Access: Local only.

    When I remove the power cord from the Linksys router the laptop recognizes that I've done so and goes through the process of searching for another wireless network to connect to. It finds a different wireless network and connects completely. A LITTLE ADMISSION OF GUILT HERE... When I set up my wireless router I did NOT set up security and I gave it a name of "linksys". I know that was/is stupid and I admit that. I don't know if that admission helps any but I thought I'd confess....

    [cable modem -> desktop]
    When I take that same pipe and plug it directly into a my desktop computer the message says:
    Local Area Connection
    Speed: 100.00
    Status: Acquiring Network address.

    Then after about a minute the following message pops up:

    This connection has limited or no connectivity. You might not be able to access the Internet or some network resources.
    For more information, click this message.
    ...
    I've checked the Device Manager on the desktop.
    In the Network Adapters I see:
    - 1394 Net Adapter
    - Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC
    Both of these devices are working properly.
    ...
    I've spoken with Comcast and the modem is working correctly.
    ...

    I've never completely reset the Linksys router to "out of the box" settings as all of the instructions I've read ask for a username and password when connecting to the router. Well..... I lost the username and password.
    ...

    Any suggestions would be very helpful.

    When you reset the router to default settings, you reset the username and password as well. I think the username should be left blank and the password is 'admin' without the 's.

    I think 192.168.1.1 is the address used for your gateway on the linksys. try setting a static ip on your computer of 192.168.1.5 or something and see if that works.

    Problem resolved with a total reset of the router.

    Funny thing is that all of my computers, except one, is a windows based computer. I grabbed my son's macintosh and that damned thing solved the problem all on it's own. weird.

    Macintosh... hummmmmmmm ....rolleyes

    THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP
