This is a problem i have had for a while, but put on the shelf for a while. The first time i noticed it was when i was using Visual Studio NET 2003 and i tried to create a web application. The project wouldn't start and i received the following error:

"The web Server reported the following error when attempting to create or open the Web project located at the following URL: 'http://localhost/WebApplication1' , 'HTTP/1.0 500 Server Error'. "

The next time it was an issue for me was when i installed a resource kit that had it's help files located in my inetpub/wwwroot folder (localhost). The help files would not come up. i tried a bazillion settings/patches/etc but none worked. Then i hit upon a "solution". If i unplug my internet connection, then the problem disappears. My VSNET will create web apps, all is well. This is inconvenient, especially since to upload projects to some sites the project has to be open, while the upload takes place (impossible if the cable is plugged in).

Why would my localhost fail when my cable is plugged in? is there a way around this? Is there some piece of information i should go after my ISP for?

    Some possibly important info:

    Windows XP Pro, fully updated
    Roger's @Home cable internet
    Visual Studio NET 2003
    IIS 5.1 with Frontpage Extensions

Not sure what else may be important info, any help is appreciated.

Have you posted this on the help forums at dsl reports? If your ISP is wacking you out somehow, the techies that hang out at dsl reports would know it.

Failing that, I'm sorry I don't have any experience is IIS, but I know someone who does, I'll ask him for you and see.

Thanks for the reply! i have this posted here, GotDotNET forums, Microsoft ASP.NET forums, and Techguy.org... yours is the first response i have received. i have been wracking my brain for other suitable places to post this, but i completely neglected the dsl reports and other broadband type sites. Thanks for the tip :)

Still waiting to hear back from my IIS friend, but let me ask you if you've ever run any other kind of server that could use localhost as a default address?

Try downloading Abyss web server, set it up, run it and see if you can ax it's localhost/index.html

Small free program, easy to remove too. Just for testing purposes.

have you tried using your machines IP address? it will perform the same.
or you could set up a www.no-ip.com address..

Just out of curiosity, what would a dynamic dns do for him at the local level?

My simple sollution go buy a cheap second network card and install it and don't hook anything up to it, and see if that fixes things.
