Locked media files

Hey Geeks, running XP Home SP3
I recently downloaded a .mkv music video file and it won't play. The file name is very long and one of the messages I get is not a valid file name. The problem however is that right clicking to rename or go to properties to rename doesn't work on this file. I've tried using UnLockMe to no avail. I can't even select the file name to copy it here for reference. I've also downloaded several times from different sources and all files are locked, which tells me the original upload is at fault. My default is KMPlayer but I've also tried Media Player Classic. My version of KLite codecs is current. Any ideas?

The only suggestion that comes to mind is to burn yourself a live cd of linux, say Ubuntu, boot from the cd (run linux from the cd) and use the file manager to delete the file.

 

File names with commas or apostrophes or minus signs or foreign language characters can be troublesome. I've managed to change names before but don't remember how exactly to do it.

Try moving the file to the C: folder, so it is easy to find then:
Start>Run>type in cmd and then enter key to start command prompt.
type CD C:\ and hit enter
Type dir /x and hit enter
Find your file by looking for the file named with the first 6 letters of the filename and ending in ~1.mkv
Type rename 6letters~1.mkv movie.mkv
if no error than type exit to close command prompt

Then you can rename movie.mkv in Explorer to a more informative name.
