    I will divide this into 4 parts
    1. Observations during the crash
    2. Action taken prior to Major Geeks discovery
    3. Results of Windows XP Cleaning procedure
    4. Additional observations

    1. I have both ZoneAlarm and SpyBot S&D installed on the laptop. I connect to the internet wirelessly via a router/switch that is used both wirelessly and connected with other pc’s, and is functioning OK.

    ZoneAlarm found SmitFraudFix in a scan and indicated that it would be removed on reboot. The reboot hung. After a hard reboot, I found the laptop:
    - Unable to connect to the Internet
    - SpyBot S&D would not run
    - ZoneAlarm would scan OK, but not update (of course)
    - Though the actions of other users, there is a “Microsoft Update” in the All Programs list (not in the intall/remove programs list) A screen shot of the All Programs list is attached as: All Programs (note Microsoft Update).JPG

    2. I downloaded and ran only one of the several available SmitFraudFix removal tools and ran it from its command line menu interface. A screen shot listing of the directory of the tool's files is attached, along with 3 log files created by different runs of the tool. Each run used a different menu selection as indicated by the log file names. The 4 files mentioned are in one zip file named: SmitFraudFix Results.zip.

    This tool found and removed at least one Trojan.

    3. I performed all of the actions requested in the Windows XP Cleaning Procedure except for any updates requiring internet access, including installing the Windows Recovery Console.

    Notes on the results:
    - SUPERAntiSpyware ran and did not find anyting (log file attached)
    - Malwarbytes Anti-Malware would not install. Only the Program Files directory was created, but not populated (No log attached)
    - compbofix ran OK (log file attached)
    - MGtools ran OK (log files zip attached)

    All log files are attached in one zip file named: Windows XP Cleaning Procedure Logs.zip

    4. . Other Observations

    - I ran HyjackThis and am attaching the resulting log file.
    - I ran LSP-Fix by dexx.org v1.1 just to show Winsock software and am attaching a screen shot of the list.
    - I looked into the internet connectivity problem as far as looking at what the standard screens were complaining about. I am attaching a Word document showing the screen shots indicating that the laptop cannot restore the IP address, but can connect to the wireless router OK.

    These attachments are in the final zip file named: Other Logs and Observations.zip

    Please do not zip the MGLogs.zip. Attach it separately. In the meantime:

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    lcrusoe
    lnwlnkfw
    tfastfat
    gxvxcwydlyxgwusapmkkmxewiltpdvbejpwws

    File::
    c:\documents and settings\User\LOCAL SETTING\Temp\lcrusoe.sys
    c:\documents and settings\User\LOCAL SETTING\Temp\lnwlnkfw.sys
    c:\documents and settings\User\LOCAL SETTING\Temp\tfastfat.sys
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\gxvxcwydlyxgwusapmkkmxewiltpdvbejpwws.sys
    c:\windows\system32\gxvxcwqqpcbrfldnbmeaufxmnroeiwintqfvi.dll

    RegLockDel::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\gxvxcserv.sys]
    @DACL=(02 0000)
    "start"=dword:00000001
    "type"=dword:00000001
    "imagepath"=expand:"\\systemroot\\system32\\drivers\\gxvxcwydlyxgwusapmkkmxewiltpdvbejpwws.sys"
    "group"="file system"

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\gxvxcserv.sys]

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Please right click Combo and delete it from your desktop. Then go back to the Read and Run Instructions and re-download it.

    Once on your desktop again, please do my previous fix again for Combo. And then get me a new MGLog.zip also.

    I re-downloaded ConboFix, dragged the script on it (on the desktop) with ZoneAlarm disabled. ComboFix ran through step 50 this time. I had to "allow" a couple of actions by ComboFix on reboot before i could disable ZoneAlarm a second time, but there was no indication that anything was not done.

    From the log file, it appears to have completed the script items.

    That did the trick......If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
