Hey I followed the instructions and here are my results. Also got an error when I went to run Root Repeal (it is enclosed in my errorlog.txt ) I was able to run it and got results for it as well. Also should I uninstall all of these programs like SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition? I noticed that it trys to startup with my computer which I have disabled for the scans..

    Thanks

    John

I strongly advise you to cleanup your Desktop. Remove everything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and definitely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.

Now please tell me what issues you are having as I am not seeing any malware in your logs.

    Thanks for your response.

I think that the problems may be cleared up right now.. One early scan found something and quarantined it. I have not noticed anything lately except the error I got when I ran Root Repeal.

As far a desktop cleanup... where do you suggest I move these files.. Documents and Program files? Can I still put some short cuts to some of the most used folders on the desktop? I have ZoneAlarm Internet Security Extreme installed but I need to renew the subscription. (cost is an issue right now), Should I use SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware in the meantime till I update it?

    Thanks again.

Yes, you could create folders in your documents folder as well as shortcuts to them. As to Zone Alarm, you can either pay for it or uninstall it and use one of the freeware programs such as Avira or AVG. SAS and MBAM are for spyware, they are not AV software. Both are good to keep as backup scanners.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Not sure if this is a result of malware..

Hi, I have run all of the checks that you posted in this forum and I think all of my malware is cleared up.. However I have noticed that my computer has been running slow and using up most of my memory when I use the browser to surf the internet and watch online videos. I am currently running Windows XP Home with SP 2 and with a Pentium 4 3.2 gig-hertz and 1.3 gigs of ram.. I have noticed that my memory has been using 70% or more when I surf the net. I have Firefox 3.6 currently installed as my primary browser and IE 8 as my secondary browser.

I have not upgraded to SP 3 for XP yet because in the past I had too many issues with some of the programs that I was running. Not sure if they have cleared up all of those problems in a new release of SP 3.

Can you tell me what I should do to speed up my computer? I also have Speed Up My PC installed and have run the optimized scans..

    Thanks for your help.

You are not running out of memory:
    Code:
    Total Physical Memory 1,536.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory 876.52 MB
So it can only be a software issue. When was the last time you defragmented your hard drive ( which I see is pretty full!!)?

Speed up your computer is going to give you all kinds of false leads. I wouldnt trust it.

    Re: Defragment

it has been over 6 months at least.. do you suggest any free programs besides the utility that comes with the computer?

    Re: Defragment

That would be a question to explore in the software forum. :)
