so i bought a Logitech Gaming Controller (looks like a PS2 controller) and i install the software that came with it. I am going through the instructions , and it says to plug in the controller so it could pick it up. i plug it in my computer has the little blip in the corner that it sees it. i hit the ok button on the program to pick it up and it does not pick up the controller. I can hook my Mp3 player and camera into my usb ports. but not a mouse or gaming controller

Uninstall the software from Add/Remove Programs (if it's listed) and make sure the controller isn't listed in the device manager. Reboot and try a different USB port to install it, like one of the rear ports and follow the directions carefully. If it installs OK, shut down, unplug the power cord (MANY motherboards still supply voltage to USB ports even when turned off), and plug the game controller into one of the front ports, preferably not the same port you used before. USB can be weird; sometimes if it doesn't install correctly the first time, it can turn into a major headache.... let us know how you proceed... good luck!
