Logmein is charging $$$ now, and it is not worth it. I am a computer programmer, so the defacto IT support for my family, all of whom live far away from me. I need a free alternative to Logmein that:

    1. is easy to use (Logmein is user friendly)
    2. is free (for non-commercial use)
    3. allows 4 or more computers (mom, dad, sis plus my own at home) to be controlled

I have read "Teamviewer" is recommended, but have spent 15 minutes trying to determine how many computers you can control, and can't find the info?

    Any other recommendations?

    Thanks,
    Matt

Thanks for the reply. One computer? Not very useful for my needs.

I am still looking for a good alternative. I don't want to install something to try it out until I know it supports enough computers. (You know how every install adds bloat to the registry among other things... want to keep my machine humming fast.)

This link looks like a useful comparison:

The last entry mentioned, "Remote Utilities", looks promising! Up to 10 computers it says...

I've never used anything like this and in fact have remote control turned off in our home computers.

This chart shows the free and paid versions.

If everyone runs Chrome, Chrome Remote Desktop might be an option.
I've heard of RealVNC but it is written in Java. I only have one computer with Java on it and it is disabled in that computer. I would not recommend installing Java to use this program.

    This looks more promising

Maybe have a look at Logmein's program Join Me that is free and allows remote control.

Do you really need to control multiple computers at the same time? Why?

In fact I just tried it myself and you can do multiple sessions on teamviewer but not sure if there is a limit on how many though.

    Sorry for the confusion.

I need to control 1 computer remotely at a time.

But I need to be able to have access to at least 4 computers, from which I will choose which single one to control at a time. Some times my mom needs help, sometimes my sister, etc.

    Thanks,
    Matt72

I would recommend in downloading Teamviewer it's a really good program.

Teamviewer will work for you perfect.

It is free, allows multiple "connections" to be stored, just create a free account and setup unattended access on each PC, linked to your account.

Not sure what the limit is, but I have probably... 10? Connections stored. You also can connect to multiple PC's at the same time, similiar to a browser window, you can "connect in new tab" right at the top of the remote desktop window, from there you can click between them.

Adding onto that, if you have a decent smartphone or tablet, you can download the free app and connect to the PC's like normal. Although it is a bit clunky to use, it is very handy for checking on things while you are away :)

If you are just doing a couple sessions here or there use the free version of TeamViewer.

We use ScreenConnect and have 300+ access session and on-demand remote support.

    Thanks for the replies, everyone.

So it seems like Teamviewer is the way to go. I will try that. And if doesn't work for me, I will try Remote Utilities.

In the interest of google searches, I will update this thread when I have some useful info about my experience.

    Thanks guys!
