    Welcome to MajorGeeks, lowgear!

Please explain what operations are slow! For example answer the below:
    • Is boot up slow?
    • Is shutdown slow?
    • Is browsing/surfing slow?
    • Is downloading slow?
    • Is running any application?
    • Is it also slow in safe boot mode?
    • Also are any process showing in Task Manager to be using a lot of CPU time?
    • Anything else slow?

    As an alternative rootkit detector

    * Please download this:SysProt AntiRootkit

This is a ZIP file so unzip onto your Desktop which should create a SysProt folder on your Desktop.
    • Open the SysProt folder by double clicking it
    • Double click Sysprot.exe to start the program.
    • Click on the Log tab.
    • In the Write to log box, make sure to select and unselect the following items.
      • Process << Selected
      • Kernel Modules << Selected
      • SSDT << Selected
      • Kernel Hooks << Selected
      • IRP Hooks << NOT Selected
      • Ports << NOT Selected
      • Hidden Files << Selected
    • At the bottom of the page
      • Hidden Objects Only << Selected
    • Click on the Create Log button on the bottom right.
    • After a few seconds a new window should appear.
    • Select Scan Root Drive. Click on the Start button.
    • When it is complete a new window will appear to indicate that the scan is finished.
    • The log will be saved automatically in the same folder Sysprot.exe was extracted to. Attach the SysProtLog.txt log file to your next message.

Once you attach the addition log and answers to my questions, I will get back to you with a set of instructions as soon as possible. Our queue is working the oldest threads first.

    Thanks for your patience.

Thanks for your quick response Dr.!
My pc is gained a little speed in the last 24h.
Boot up is slow ,but it was set on selective startup for a while for a reason i cannot remember. It is now set on normal startup, so that could be the reason for that slight drag. firefox is going at the normal rate now, IE still will not open.
Downloads are running normal. no processes hogging cpu.
McAfee also did a scan this morning and pulled StealthMBR.c!rootkit
not sure if that is something i just got from the read and run or not.
    Attached is the SysProtLog.
    Thanks again for your help

    Please follow the below instructions:

    Step 1:
Please download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    Step 2:
Now download HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe by noahdfear and save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe to run the tool.
    • When the tool completes it will inform you HelpAssistant was successfully removed, or it may require a reboot. DO NOT reboot at this point if it tells you this. Do the below first.
    • With Windows Explorer, navigate to the C:\MGtools folder and double click on mbrfix.bat ( If not sure how to use Windows Explorer, you can optionally click Start > Run and enter C:\MGtools\mbrfix.bat into the run box and click OK. ) This will run quickly flashing a black screen in front of you too fast to read.
    • NOW REBOOT!

    Step 3:
Now extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Step 3:
After the re-boot, run the MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double-clicking on it. (NOTE: If using Vista, don't double-click, use right-click and select "Run As Administrator").

Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    OK,
I went thru the last set of instructions-
    Ran HelpAsst_Mebroot_fix.exe--no problems.
Ran mbrfix and got the popup "mbr.exe has encountered an error and had to close..
Was i supposed to shut off McAfee?
Set mbrfix to trusted in McAfee and re-ran, window closed quickly,
    rebooted.
    Ran avenger w/script,
    rebooted.
On startup, an error message came up stating-windows cannot find c:\cleanup.exe..
    Ran getlogs.
Same error as before- MBR.exe has encountered an error and had to close..
    It still cycled thru everything.
IE is now working, speed is good on everything.

I would also like to know the best way to eliminate certain programs from running at startup.
    Thanks again.

    You're welcome!

Comment:You probably should be looking at getting a larger harddive before long.
    Code:

    Free Space --- [color=red][b]1.66 GB[/b] [/color]

Please remove this from your desktop if you haven't already: C:\Documents and Settings\alex conway\Desktop\SUPERAntiSpyware.exe

Using Windows Explorer - delete this folder if you don't know what it is:
    C:\Documents and Settings\alex conway\Local Settings\Application Data\hbtnyl

Delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

You may want to use this to de-select some un-needed applications and processes from loading at startup.
    Startup_Control_Panel_Standalone

Your logs look good! If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double-click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:
