Well after the problems that I had earlier with my Earthlink accelerator I went and reinstalled the newest version of the Earthlink software. Stupid mistake!! Now the accelerator is integrated with the newest EL stuff and is not a stand alone product like it was in last years software. So in order to run their accelerator now you have to have their software running in the background and you can not just use the DUN. So I uninstalled everything and am looking for a free acclerator to use. My wife and I rely on the accelerator because without it, it would literally take a couple hours to do all that we do. With one it takes about 30 minutes. I know it doesn't speed up my internet connection, but it does speed up how long it takes for websites to download. Does anyone know of a free one that is pretty good?

I tried most of the freeware internet boosters in MajorGeeks 'Internet Tools' section, and found TZ Connection Booster was the easiest to use and most effective, sped things up 2x at least on a DSL line. Give it a try!

I will give it a try, but we're talking two different things unfortunetly. I'm looking for a program that allows you to browse with Dial-up up to 5 times faster. A program like Propel's accelerator, but one that's free. Earthlink uses propel as their dial-up accelerator, but as I mentioned above I can no longer use it. As for the program that you mentioned... there is nothing that can make my connection any better. I connect at 28.8kbps and that's the best I can get. I live in rural NY and am on a Pair-Gain System which unfortunetly limits you to a 28.8k connection.

Earthlink's 5x accelerator is a client server product, where the server would compress web pages and your PC would decompress it. The two components were customized by Earthlink and are proprietary to a point, so I would not expect to find a free alternative to this product.

Other accelerators out there may improve the performance of your PC and internet connection.

Have you tried uninstalling the latest version and installing the older version. I am using a version that sits in the tray, but doesnt' load the full bulkware that Earthlink provides.

Unfortunetly I don't have a copy of the older software available to me. I downloaded it off teh internet last year and never received the Cd. Earthlink no longer has on their website... only the 2005 version. I am going to call around to Radioshack and see if maybe they have any old copies laying around.

LGW, if you are talking about Download Accelerator as part of Earthlink, the google link

    http://www.google.com/search?num=20&hl=en&lr=lang_en&ie=ISO-8859-1&as_qdr=all&q=%22download+accelerator%22&btnG=Search&lr=lang_en

gives lots of links for Download Accelerator, from v7.x back to v5 at least. Bazza

PS: From my dim memory I remember that Download Accelerator Plus loaded 130 instances of spyware/adware on my laptop. I scrubbed it and use Leechget, free from MG.

If they don't have it on their website, chances are they arn't supporting it any more.

Makes sense as they will be pushing their DSL products (i expect) and so they'll want to move from making 56k faster to making DSL faster... and so they take off the optimisations for 56k and improve their DSL platform

    Sorry, I waffled :p
