it took them 2 days to figure out that a dozen poeple were playing halo in the library LOL, it was so sweet, a bunch of people downloaded the trial so we played a LAN game at my school, they finally caught on though, no more halo :(

I find it really sad that so many kids today think it's ok to continuously break the rules. The rules & restrictions are there for a reason, just as laws are.

Will you be keeping this in mind when they place even more restrictions on the school computers to stop things like this from happening again.

Or...when they get walked off the school grounds in handcuffs b/c they've been arrested, which more and more schools & colleges are doing when faced with such activity by students.

Why have rules and laws.. people are just going to keep breaking them...

Anyways, the US is trying to protect us from literally EVERYTHING thats why people are debating whether the US is the top country or not...

Yeah, once they installed Doom (original) on the school network for 3 days at the end of term. Who knows why, but they did.

I just want to say, in keeping with the thread topic, anytime you use someone else's computers or resources, be it in school or job, you may/will have consequences to deal with when caught. Your post is basically irrelevant, BTW, I'm just trying to help you ;)

I am really concerned about some study about the USA being the top country. Guess I missed out on the contest notification.

As for the US being too strict, you could always move to places like Saudi Arabia where they lop off your hands for stealing.

US> slap on the hand, possibly jail time.

    There> lose an appendage.

    Those grow back, right?

Sounds like a real winner of a teacher. I mean, wow, you sure can learn a lot about computers from playing a video game.

Omni, if you think you can repost something without bringing in a previous argument from another thread, feel free.

I've deleted your largely inflammatory comment, and my responses as well.

The other mods are free to review them, of course.

PM a mod if you think so. I removed my comments because they were inapropriate, and yours because it was the continuation of some aggression you have from another thread. At any rate, this will be discussed no further here. Take it to PMs or report the thread.

No, sadly you missed the point. Let me try to explain this to you so you can further understand. School is an investment by society in order to further that society. Rules are placed in school to ensure that investment is used wisely. Granted there are some rules that make no obvious sense to those who are under that jurisdiction but the rules are there just the same. If you disagree with those rules there are certain proceedures that can be taken to have the rules amended or stricken if they are truly found to be irrelevant and ineffective.

Playing games on school time on school property is hardly a wise choice. As far as the teacher allowing game play on a LAN for a test, I would have to discuss this with the teacher (as a concerned parent) in order to ascertain what the motives and the expected results were. If it were merely to exhibit and explain packet transfer across the network and it were manipulated in such a way to allow you a chance to troubleshoot the network I might agree with it. Otherwise if it were only to allow you to play the game for a grade I would have to take issue with it. The bit about playing Doom that Goldie has described could merely be a time waster and a method to keep the students busy if all requirements of the course had been met.

If you choose to break the rules by playing games, browsing sites that are restricted, downloading warez or other restricted files, or (heaven forbid) developing and transmitting malicious code then you have to be prepared for any and all consequences. This could range from a simple slap on the hand and certain priviledges being removed to legal action being taken. My advise is simply this, use school to learn and do your playing at home.

So aside from the obvious fact that downloading and playing games on school computers when they are not allowed by said school is stupid and basically childishly annoying...

WTF kind of security does the school network have? I mean...some kid downloaded something and installed it and it LET him? My terminal at the office doesn't allow me to put anything on it, including Flash updates, etc. I have to wonder at the logic involved on both fronts in this thread.

Oh when I was in the first year I managed to install msn messenger on every computer I could log on to!

It was back in the day when every computer had it's own hard drive so you could install anything, so we put msn on all of them and just sat away chatting. They soon fixed it!
Man I wonder if I could still do that, 6 years on from then!!!

In fact, doom on the network wasn't just a timewaster - it was also a little earner too! People (including teachers) had to pay 50p to have their permissions changed to play the game. Of course, when they got onto the network game, they all got pwned by the tech Jeremy :D

As far as I'm concerned, school computers are there to do school work. They're crap in comparison to my home computers - they're not built for games. They've got horrible intergrated Intel Extreme graphics chipsets.

Regardless of rules I wouldn't ever play a game on the school computers, not even a stupid little flash game. Not just because they'd have crap performance, but because I've got better things to be doing during school time. Like getting the A-Levels I need to get a place at the University I want. That's way more important than playing games.

Interestingly enough, I'm going to be on the other side of this situation quite soon - we're getting a wireless network for the common room at school, and I'm going to be spot monitoring traffic to make sure people arn't using the network inappropriately.

I had to write my own Code of Conduct for the network, which has been be approved by the Head and IT department. It's all reasonable stuff. Don't use the Internet connection to play games. Don't even think about looking at porn. Don't try and buy stuff online - because that's STUPID when you're on a public WLAN.

Unfortunately we are forced to abide by the great firewall of Buckinghamshire council, since the only internet connection to the school is a fiber PtP to that. That blocks things like Gmail, which is bizzare since it's the network admin's responsibilty to scan inbound traffic and prevent virus infection, not the ISP's.
